| I love the look of Kodachrome, but the film itself has been a PITA to work with in modern years. In fact, I'm surprised this hasn't come sooner. The film is expensive, the processing is expensive, and you have to wait a few days for the USPS to ship it to/from Kansas. Kodachrome also had a nasty side effect of not scanning too well on some film scanners.
Its just much easier to shoot with Ektachrome (or really any other slide film) and get processing done and scan it in the same day. Its not Kodachrome, but the workflow is far easier and faster.
I still have one remaining roll of Kodachrome 64 that I plan to shoot with soon. I guess that would be my final farewell to a great film. | |

| Supposedly it was down to 1% or less of their film sales. In fact it was only produced on time a year. and this last batch will be the last when it is gone.
While long a favorite of pro's, it was just too slow for the mass consumer market, Who prefered high shutter speeds (especially the shutter jabbers) and low light ability, and lost out to Ekrachrome and the like. (which could also be self processed).

I used bulk Tri-X and I thought it came in 100 foot rolls, but that was many moons ago so I could be incorrect.
I dabbled in Kodachrome but it was pricey once developing was included and required a lab to process so I pretty much stuck with B&W which I could process and print.
Another thing I liked about B&W was there was also something almost sensual about seeing a print develop in the tray and deciding just when “that’s it” and then quickly sliding it into the stop bath to lock the shot.

Surprised they actually (and not for a long time now) had bulk Kodachrome rolls.... and yes I would guess stsandard 100 ft) I don;t thinkthough Kodachrome ever had a self processing option.... and again why Ektachrome thought too cool (toned) for some took over.... it could be self processed, and cheap quick drug/cam store processed.. EVen decades ago Kodachrome had to go to a cam store and sent off to Kodak or who knows where.
While not as complex as tri neg Technicolor....Kodachrome far from simple, and chemically near as complex, ... definately NOT DIY.

| Same with me. I went from Ektachrome to Kodachrome and carried their process mailers (PK20). I could send it in while on a vacation. Back then, Dallas was the closest center. But, like many, I quit shooting slide film. Loved the product, but understand that from a business sense, there isn't a very large market anymore. | |

Fact of the real matter it was just too slow, but probably the finest grain color film ever if you could deal with the slow speed application.

4 edits | Not exactly, but in that Kodachrome as in reality overly minorly warm, a minor warm filter could give somewhat of the effect., if it doesn't over power/tint the cool colors.
And why so many early on had an aversion to Ektachrome being too cool, now seen as relatively actually neutral.Especially compared to digital with electronic actual WB... no doubt about it Kodachrome was unnaturally warm. (even true whites were warm)
Though what made it so great for portraits, fall foliage and things like that. Which we can now all do EASLILY in post if that is really the effect we want, vs neutral color and true white.
