And if you happen to still have some Kodachrome on hand the only lab in the U.S. that can process Kodachrome Dwayne's Photo will be processing it through 2010.

I have seen it mentioned that one of the attractions professionals had of Kodachrome was its archival abilities.

And yes they where on to something.

The top shot is as scanned, the rest have been cleaned up a bit and all where shot on Kodachrome as marked on the holder.

These slides came from my parents collection and where stored by myself under less than ideal conditions for a number of years before being scanned to digital about five years ago, now the child in the photos is yours truly and I'm in my mid fifties so that should give you an idea of the age of those slides.

While the colors have shifted and faded a little when compared to what print of the same age stored under the same conditions would look like they are in great shape. Kodachrome was in its day and still is an amazing technology.

That slideshow almost made me cry. I don't care what technology you have hooked to your glass, that stuff is in a class of its own (and I remember most of those shots).

Agreed. And what struck me, is they are "simple" shots. Just taken by artists with a great eye and ability to visualize a great photograph.

As well as the technical ability to expose Kodachrome dead center in its dynamic range to best capture the wonderful light that made most of these images what they are!

Are there any filters out there that even come close to replicating that look?

AlienSkin makes a plugin called Exposure that has some Kodachrome settings. 30 day demo if you want to try it out...

DxO Optics also has a plugin called FilmPack that tries to replicate Kodachrome
»www.dxo.com/intl/photo/filmpack

Nik's Color Efex Pro also does this
»www.niksoftware.com/colorefexpro···ntry.php

They all have demos, if you want to try them.

Not exactly, but in that Kodachrome as in reality overly minorly warm, a minor warm filter could give somewhat of the effect., if it doesn't over power/tint the cool colors.

And why so many early on had an aversion to Ektachrome being too cool, now seen as relatively actually neutral.Especially compared to digital with electronic actual WB... no doubt about it Kodachrome was unnaturally warm. (even true whites were warm)

Though what made it so great for portraits, fall foliage and things like that. Which we can now all do EASLILY in post if that is really the effect we want, vs neutral color and true white.
