The Dv8or : As for the Tavern on the Green alternative, The River Cafe might offer a nice view, but one of the signature assets of New York is its wide variety of either very New York style restaurants and ethnic choices. Go dine on Vietnamese or Turkish, or go grab a pastrami sandwich at Katz's. The River Cafe offers what every other water-bordering city offers, and you can get it without paying a fortune for a meal.

The writer is a psycho deluxe for speaking bad about the hot dog carts. Even when I hated hot dogs, I would eat dirty water hot dogs. They offer a great bargain when its that magic hour between lunch and dinner, and you need something quick to tide you over while walking, which you do a lot of in New York.

I agree with HG about skipping the Empire State Bldg and Macy's.
