[HN7000S] Online Backup - Carbonite

Not sure if this topic has been covered, but..
Has anyone tried or been successfull using Carbonite on-line backup over there HughesNet connection ?

I know upload speeds are slow, but as far as I know, uploads don't count against your usage, so if the computer is left online all the time, carbonite could just chug away backing up files.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [HN7000S] Online Backup - Carbonite

I bought a Mosy account and started an online backup a few weeks ago. As it was lumbering along I did some quick calc's and came up with: if it were running at max home plan upload speed 24x7 it would take about two and a half months to back up 100 GB. Figured at best the backup would be long out of date before then, and at worst I would burn out my transmitter. Then, I also thought about how difficult it would be to restore within FAP limits. So, I aborted the backup and canceled my account and went back to my multiple external drives.

Very good point: even if getting it uploaded isn't a problem, you'll have to d/l it back at some point.

As far as I know, upload does count against your usage. Look at the last column on the HughesNet Usage page.

I know it never has for me.
But then, look at the upload speed!
Mine is definitely above the "calculated" refresh rate,
and I've often uploaded continuously for over 24 Hours
to my clients. The upload speed is not as big a drag on
the system as downloads.....well, maybe a verrry slow
drain.

I've used Mozy without issues, I had the account when I used actual (gasp!) broadband via DSL, continued to use it with Hughesnet on two pc's for quite a while too, I just scheduled it for the fap-free times and never had an issue, considering its unlikely you'll need to download ALL the files you backed up if you lose something, you can just download what file you need, works great.

The biggest load is the initial transfer. The question is whether you plan to back up the entire drive(s) or just crucial, irreplaceable folders. You can select what you want to save, so that it minimizes that startup blast.

Although the Hughes FAP page does not mention uploads at all, they ARE included on the usage page and no doubt count in the FAP total. And as papa01 pointed out, restoration of all that data is a guaranteed FAP.

Carbonite and other online backups are not the answer with HughesNet. And given the low price of external hard drives, why bother? Get two of them. The odds of your main drive and both backups simultaneously crapping out are essentially zero (unless your house burns down). And they're a helluva lot faster.
