Transparent smileys?

How do make a picture in PS with a transparent background? I want to make a few smileys and they have to have the transparent background. Thanks!

Start with a new canvas white or black.
Make a new layer and make the smiley circle on that layer.
Then make new layers for the eyes, mouth, and whatever else.
This way you can select one part and move it around or edit it.
After you are satisfied with it delete the original layer and save the image as a png.

If you are going to make a lot of them I would make the circle the same way as above then just save the circle as a png. Saves making the circle every time.

Dont know if you wanted or needed one but I made a vector circle in Fireworks.
Canvas is 300x300
Circle is 296x296
Just resize/recolor to whatever you want.

What I have found is if you are erasing a background (or whatever) it is much easier if you have a dark layer under the area you are erasing. You can easily see spots you missed or spots that got over erased.
The same for working on vector symbols or whatever. The image you are making is a lot easier to see.
After you are done just delete that layer and you have your transparency.
