I am anxiously awaiting TIVO's Hi-def DVR for DirecTV. My wife loves the SD R-10, and how it records stuff for her that she she likes without having to set it up. And anything that makes the wife happy makes ME happy!

tivo can't do half the stuff cable dvr's do.

1. SDV without the need for more hardware
2. Two way services. cable cards weren't needed with the older style boxes till the FCC sold out to tivo and required the cable companies to provide cable cards..

it's the other way around: cable dvr's can do about half what a Tivo can do.

plus, SDV / on demand is complete garbage. it's filler designed to look like something useful but it never was to me.

Actually this is wrong.

You can do SDV and two way services... its just that AGAIN CableLabs and pretty much everyone cable co. involved is taking their sweet ass time with the USB adaptor to make this all work properly.

sdv is not complete garbage if your favorite channel is moved there since you are the only to watch it.

I don't want to pay monthly for it.

If I could extract the videos from it (a-la old school SD models) then I would be all over it.

To match my current SA DVR (which I love) I would need a $300 Tivo HD DVR and also rent two cable cards. And then what a month?

$600 for the LARGER HD XL? Gimme a break.

I looked at Tivo To Go's FAQ - what a joke! I don't want proprietary DRM that won't work in ANY device that I will actually use.

I love my six TiVoHDs and three Series 3 tiVos I 'm currently using.

They work much better than anycable company DVRs I've used. And in the long run, much cheaper too. I pay $6.95 a month for the boxes or I've paid $200 to $300 for lifetime service.
The local cable companies want $16 to $19 a month for their DVRs and they can't even record reliably like TiVo. I've used over twenty TiVos since 2001 and the number of missed programs can be counted on one hand. Some of the people I know using cable Company DVRs miss that many recordings in a month.

Even if the cable companies offered me free TV, phone and internet service for life, with the stipulation that I had to use their DVRs. I would not take them up on the offer. Their DVR offerings are that bad.

I recently bought two more TiVoHD boxes from TiVO for $500 each which included lifetime service for each box. So $200 for the TiVo and $300 for the lifetime service.
Then I'll throw in a 1TB drive which is only $75 and I'll have 157 hours of recording capacity for HD.

I'm on FIOS and I can transfer any recording I make to another TiVo on my account or to a PC for permanent storage or to be burned to a BD or DVD.

So where's netflix, amazon, HME apps, mp3 playback support (over the network no less), Live365 and THX certification?

Which cable DVRs have a nice little OLED display to tell you what's recording without having to turn on the TV?

Where's the ability to offload shows to or ingest them from your PC, or to and from other DVRs?

These are just a few of the features on my Series 3 TiVo DVR.

Cable DVRs are stupid. I had one from Cablevision and TiVo is 100000000x better.

Don't blame the lack of ondemand on TiVo. Blame it on CableLabs and the stupid cable companies who want to tie you to their box forever and completely control your TV set, or who are afraid of people uploading shows to bittorrent (which is why you can only get cablecard TV tuners on brand new PCs).

Well to be fair, the Series 3, the one with the OLED screen is not sold any more. Although I prefer my Series 3 boxes over myTiVoHD boxes, but the S3 can't handle multistream cable cards. So I'll be trading my S3 boxes with my girlfriends TiVoHD boxes since she only uses OTA.
