Optimal is tough. I would say there really is none. Being in the same room would be a good start. But you have to count for all interference around you. That is going to give you a performance hit as well. I range in the 48-66 dBm for my 2 devices in use. It is always switching in between that. But the laptop is in the next room and the Wii is in the living room. That is fine though for 54mb connection. Channel wise. Use this program »www.metageek.net/products/inssider and walk around the inside/outside of the house. You can then see what channels are taken and what you have to work with for a selection.

thank you for answering...just one more question. What is the optimal signal/ noise ratio. For example....for this laptop (wireless) with the router set at 35mW...the wireless signal is averaging -60 and the noise is at -92.

So when setting the tx power...where should those signals be?

Turning it up higher can effect the signal. I think 70mW is way to high as it is at stock level for that firmware. I found putting it to 28mW gave me best performance. That is the default level with Linksys official firmware any ways. You should look into after market antennas if possible on that model.

I flashed a Linksys wrt54g router today to use DD-WRT v24. So far this is working like a champ. But I have a question regarding the tx power. The defaault rate is 70, but i'm looking to turn it up to overcome some impediments (plaster, brick, range) at my house. Is there any good ideas floating around on how much I can turn this up without prematurely cooking the router?

thx in advance
