NETGEAR ProSecure UTM25

My question involves in comparison between similar functions on hardware product. Comparison on the company support and peoples suggestions on their product. I need truth and honest advice.

I found these product on the web that had almost the same functions. Is their others?

Let's start with these two products:

CISCO/LINKSYS RVS4000
NETGEAR PROSECURE UTM25

Can anyone tell me advice and satisfaction with the performance and costumer support between these two products?

Hardware-wise, the Netgear will be built much better than the Linksys. Plus, the Netgear has many more features (which may or may not matter to you, depending on your situation).

As for firmware, Linksys factory firmware has historically been decent, but not the best. I would like to say that the Netgear firmware will be better, but, experiences with products such as the FVX538v2 (this has been out for awhile, and, so far, 3 vendors have worked on the firmware for it, yet there are still significant firmware issues) have made me wary. Since these ProSecure products are quite new, I personally would wait for some solid reviews to appear before buying one.

Not to bash Netgear, but experiences with other products have shown me what is possible. For example, I recently purchased a used Juniper Networks NetScreen 5GT. The firmware in this is out-of-date (so far, I have not purchased the support contract required to get updated firmware), yet the unit has been rock-solid. Thus, my expectations are now higher than they used to be.

Thank you for your honesty and by giving this type of information might help change some companies thinking.

I do not know why Cisco/Linksys act this way because they have a pretty good equipment. The RVS4000 had all the things you need for little network of 10 users for small business. I have been contacting Linksys for 3 years and even gave them help on this product. Before Cisco's purchase, I had no problems with Linksys support team and their equipment. I also thought with Cisco in the picture it would excellent. So far no luck!!

That why I am pretty hesitated of choosing this type of product because I don't want to live this situation again.

On the Netgear web site, says that you can try the UTM25 for 1 mouth. Do you think it's worth a try? Is 1 mouth enough.

For how long should I wait to buy this product if it's ok?
Is their a web site I can relate to and help me get a good idea?

A month's trial is certainly a good idea, but, unfortunately, that isn't nearly long enough to determine how they will handle firmware issues over the long haul.

If it turns out that these new ProSecure products are really repackaged versions of something that has been on the market for awhile and has thus had many bugs worked out of it, I would be a lot more confident about purchasing one. Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything as to whether these are "clean sheet" designs or not, and I don't expect Netgear to tell you (but it wouldn't hurt to ask). For example, for awhile (and perhaps still), 3Com had networking security products that were really repackaged SonicWalls. Thus, these units had an established pedigree. No clue regarding these new Netgear items.

Cisco sells support for a fee.
But frankly if you want value, get something like

And install m0n0wall, pfsense, or a generic linux distro. It will give you functionality of a $2000 router/firewall.
