Just read that everyone and their mother wants to see if Michael Jackson really died.

Its official Michael Jackson has also killed the internet.

Yea.. that sucks..

Speeds appear to be back up to par.

So the router thing was just coincidence? Bummer...

I think you need to get tier2 support involved and somehow have them monitor things when it's going bad. Which is going to be tough since it's happening off-hours

This might sound dumb, but is anyone else accessing your WiFi?

Deblin, thanks for your help. I will just keep a close eye on things. I posted in the verizon direct forums and someone is helping me.

MacAlert, no that is not a dumb question. But the wifi on the dlink is secure with wpa2 (n-only) and the actiontech has wep security by default so that's not the issue.

Y'know....I see this thread pop up and it momentarily makes me think I'm back in the OOL forum.

I had the same thought as MacAlert. I find myself wondering if someone isn't occasionally somehow leeching off your connection. The symptoms you're describing seem too typical for cable service, but atypical for FiOS.

It's been well documented that WEP is just a little better than worthless when it comes to securing wifi. Next time the slowdown happens, why not turn off off wifi in the Actiontec and see if that pops your speed back up?

Or, take a look at the Actiontec status screen and see if there's anything you don't recognize on the My Network page.

If you're not using the AT's wifi, I'd disable it entirely...just to be sure...WEP is easily cracked.

Lol.. i know wep is easily cracked. I've seen it first hand but trust me it is not the wifi. I'm normally on my dlink when the slowdown occurs and it is set to wireless n band only with wpa2 aes security. Last night I just immediately switched back to the actiontech router when the slowdown occurred to try to rule out the router. And I was getting the same slowdown on the actiontech.

Wait, to be clear, when you have the d-link plugged in, you are NOT using the actiontec then? If so, then yes it's not someone leeching your wifi.

The way you mentioned it, I thought perhaps BOTH pieces of equipment were hooked up at the same time.

Are you always testing from the same laptop?

Windows auto updates can do some odd things

I don't have fios tv.. just internet+phone so I have only the dlink router attached. Last night I took the dlink completely offline and put the actiontec in its place to isolate the router issue. I had the same results with the actiontec.

As far as speedtesting, I only mentioned the laptop because I wanted to try different/shorter ethernet cables which would allow me to bring my router right next to the ont and plug my laptop's nic into the router. I know it isn't a problem with the cable after that testing. I normally do my testing on my desktop computers.

I would try cloning different MAC addresses to get a new DHCP lease and try to hop to a different subnet to see if it helps. That's about all I can suggest you try on your end beyond putting in a ticket with Verizon and pursuing things that way. Maybe they can have someone take a look at it during off-hours when it's occurring.

thanks Deblin. I will try that. Here is another speed test with the actiontech router and 1 desktop pc hardwired to the router.

It's like i'm provisioned for 15/25 rather than 25/15. lol

It's almost like a neighbor is eating your bandwidth when they start watching VOD. Does this seem to happen only during prime time, or does this phenomenon occur at any hour of the day?

Not sure if this was answered already or not. Is the problem specific to one computer or are all affected?
