[connectivity] My DSL drops at exactly 9:53 PM every night

Well the title says it all and I have to say Verizon DSL support has been less than helpful. We had a tech out and he said it was my modem/router. So a couple hundred bucks later and the problem still isn't fixed. Now DSL support basically said "we can't help" There HAS to be a fix for this. I'm so disappointed in my service right now.

Find something else to do at 9:52pm?

What do your line stats look like? Go to »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm and post up the info there if you have a Westell, and also post up the modem logs.

Perhaps there's a scheduled task or something on your computer(s) that are connected to the modem/router that is causing the drop? Or (hopefully not) a virus or something of that nature?

Any other devices in the house using the modem? Tivo, etc?

Well here comes a dumb question, what stats am I looking for here? I have a netgear router/modem. I can access the stats and all, just don't know what I'm looking for.

are u losing sync or just internet? sounds like something is accessing the line at the time. possibly an alarm, cablebox, water meter reader? I would directly connect only the modem to the line and see if it does it at that time. If not, at least u know its something in the house.

Mine does the same thing, at almost the same time and has been doing it for a few years. The modem looses sync - DSL light goes out, then slow blink, than fast blink and then comes on solid.

I have asked about this problem and VOL has not been able to figure it out.

My stats are excellent btw.

if you are losing DSL sync at that same time every day, this is an indication that something is changing the noise on the telephone line at that time. Lights on a dimmer, street lamps, AM radio stations powering up at night.... The loss of DSL sync at the same time is due to an environmental event which is changing the noise on your telephone line.

Is there some published technical information on this phenomenon? Mine, after eight weeks of connection loss at the same time, is now losing internet one minute earlier than what had been the norm. ISP bridging, port, and router changes, plus three different end user routers may have produced a one minute change but no permanant resolution.

May I just point out, since about 6 months ago, every 7-10 days at 2AM, my modem will resync. My line stats themselves are solid and it's not a margin issue.

Just a real wild guess, but could it be the firmware check/update?

I doubt it is the h/w or modem doing an update. Have switched modems and routers with no change in behavior.

It's been a long time since we heard this kind of complaint that was generated by Verizon, but just to throw it out there, Verizon used to run some sort of line test from the COs, that was capable of causing sync loss. Having been generated by computer, the test ran at the same time every day. Discovery was difficult, and required a tech to quiz the CO as to what was occurring at the CO, at the specified time that the line drops.

Another thought, would be to look for a half-ringer test module in your NID. There's a pic of one in the DSL FAQs under Hardware. If you find one, it can be removed and the wires spliced, or have Verizon remove it. When they go bad the usual symptom is sync loss when the phone rings.

Hi JohnA,
My first thought was a automated test as the number dates back to 1975 when these things were widely done. I have asked Verizon direct about this and they drew a blank.

There is no half ringer on my NID- It is a 66 block terminal

Not the firmware update check as that seems to be performed two times a day with my modem, as shown by the logs. My modem rebooted yesterday at 3PM because we lost power due to a heavy thunderstorm in the area killing power for an hour, but before that, the modem hadn't rebooted for a few months.

Yeah, like I said, just grasping at anything at this point.

I believe it was called a lit test or something like that. Co tech would know nothing about it as it is done in the switch, A switch tech would need to check for it. Did u plug your modem directly into the nid to see if u get the problem at that time? You could even make a call around that time to see what happens.

MTU test on the switch. My phone use to ring one short burst at the same time every day. You have to find a switch technician who knows how to turn it off, but it can be done.

Since it occurs like clockwork every day have you ever tried to be on the phone at 9:53? If this is a CO originated test I assume it won't happen if phone if in use. Hopefully a phone tech can chime in with more knowledge.

If phone connection is fine (you don't hear anything strange at 9:53) will be interesting to see if internet connection is still affected.
