$12.95 a month??! $299 for 20 hours of hd? $599 for 150?!

What a fucking rip off. My directv service has $199 hd dvrs with 500 gigs space (Around 100 hours of hd programming), and a $6.00 a month service charge.

You can get a TivoHD for $499 with no monthly fees ever:

»www3.tivo.com/store/addpackage.d···4KDHVR3S

The TivoHD officially supports a 1TB external drive. It also allows for unofficial internal drive upgrades (these will void the warranty) up to 1.26TB. You can find a TivoHD FAQ with screenshots, demo videos, tips, and drive upgrade instructions right here.

DirecTV's DVRs are subsidized and require an expensive satellite subscription to function. The TivoHD works with cable, but it does not require cable; it also works with HDTV signals from an off-air antenna, eliminating the need to pay $50-$100/mo for television service.

WOW, a whole 20 hours of hd recording time to record Lost and American Idol?! For only $498?! What was I ever thinking getting Directv?

Sorry, but again, no. The $6 Directv fee applies to 4 dvrs, and I can get 100 hours of recorded hd programming for less then $200.

Not to mention Directv has things to actually WATCH and not the crap that comes on OTA every day.

Versus $498 for each tivo, to only record 20 hours.

At 20 hours and $498, you may as well use a vcr/dvd recorder/betamax!

You aren't limited to 20 hours. You can get an external eSATA drive and expand it to over 100 hours.

The eSATA drives are pretty cheap now.

The 20 hours is nonsense. Since most Cable Companies compress the hell out of their HD channels, the 20 hours of HD recording is an estimate to the low side. You can't get nearly 100 hours, but you can certainly record more than 20 hours depending on what you record, and how compressed it is.

The DirecTV DVR can probably do more than 100 hours of HD because I know DirecTV compresses their HD a bit too. Everyone does.

DirecTV is also using MPEG4 which yields a lower bitrate, which means more hours per gigabyte.

DirecTV's website says up to 50 HD hours....certainly not 100.

And the $200 you pay for each box still doesn't let you own it.

Their interface is terrible (which is why they are bringing back TiVo...go figure) and they still don't allow to to buffer two live shows at a time. Crap crap crap.
