[FYI] Photographer Shot....LITERALLY! While shooting landscapes.

Just a reminder of what can happen when you THINK you're alone out shooting landscapes, or anything else for that matter. This is a friend I recently became acquainted with, she breeds and sells Dogs and is into photography as well. From my understanding she actually had permission to shoot on the area she was in, while laying on her stomach taking the shot of an old nearby cabin she was literally shot with a 22 mag in the face!!!
I've came close to having the same incident happen to me on more than one occasion, it's a shame in this day and time something as quiet and placid as photography even in the wilderness has became potentially a life threatening situation/s. Here is a link to her site with more info in detail as well as pictures and what happened.

The purpose of this post, be AWARE of your surroundings when out in the field, stay as close to being in order as you can, have permission even in writing if possible and always be alert, this is such a shame!

This is quite the sad accident and I'm sorry to hear that it happened to one of your friends. She's quite blessed to be alive.

One of the things that my Dad instilled in us from an early age is that when we were out hunting in the wilderness (for game or for photos, no matter) we should always wear clothing that stands out and cannot be mistaken for anything but a human being. I have a vest like highway construction workers wear packed in my truck specifically for the times that I venture out into the woods.

Let's all keep safe!

Good question. Not only did this jerk shoot her but it sounds like he really didn't do much to help her even though he was fully aware of what he did.

Hell I'd make a paypal contribution if I knew at least someone else would go and shoot that other dumbf*** in the face.

What a piece of shit.

Here there's no tolerance for that crap. You can't just shoot at an intruder on your land. Well you can try and bet your ass you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars.

EDIT - I pray the next glass lens that looks at that guy, is the lens of a gun scope.

She should get a good attorney and make it her land, I see a great deal of pain and suffering there and that can have a dollar value applied to it, probably more than the land is worth but seizing the proeprty would be a good beginning.

according to her story, the shooter was a NEIGHBOR and not the landowner of the land she was on.

Yeah the shooter was the neighbor to the land she was shooting on, it is owned by another individual in which she had permission to shoot there about anytime she wanted. The shooter shouldn't even have been shooting in that direction, who knows what he was thinking.

Damn, Pret, that's pretty scary.

And it comes at a good time for me, reminding me to wear that silly orange mesh vest that I bought many years ago for shooting in the Virginia woods during the various hunting seasons. I've kept the vest in the Subaru Forester for years; now I'll be a bit more conscientious about putting it on.

However, I'm now thinking it would be a good idea to also get some stick-on international yellow strips for my backpacks since that occludes a lot of the vest from the rear view.

As a matter of fact, I routinely carry either an international yellow vest or jacket when shooting in the UK during pheasant hunting season.

And, having two German Shepherds, one here in the US and another in the UK, I'm glad to hear the dogs came through okay also.

Best wishes to your friend.

I just don't understand the whole mentality of shoot at whatever moves. I've known a person or two that has to kill whatever hapless creature comes on their property.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all the kind words...they really uplift me.

Who would think that it would be dangerous to take photos on a farm you have permission to be on when it isn't hunting season and you are wearing a purple windbreaker and bright yellow backpack laying on your stomach???? I didn't even have a cell phone on me (I don't think it would have worked anyway), no contact information etc., because it was just a 1 mile country walk to the farm. I only passed one other farm on the way there and the man who shot me lived with his girlfriend on the next farm on the road.

I have since went to a used store and bought MANY, MANY BRIGHT ORANGE, RED, YELLOW tops, and coats for all seasons. Not that it would have helped me in that situation anyway...I already had bright clothing on and he had a scope on his rifle. But...at least it made me feel better to go and buy them for my next photoshoot.

Another word of advice...get a photo partner if you can. I just heard on the news of a boy here shot during Turkey season last year, and left to die by the shooter. He did die.

Another shooting like this was written about in the "W.Va. Sportsman magazine. He was left to die also...and did.

If you would like to read more about my story just go to www.puppymatrix.com and there is a link at the top that says "I was shot"

May you all have a safe photoshoot! The word has taken on a whole new meaning to me.

Kelly,

Glad to see you're up and about enough to post here.

Whether in the US or the UK, I do always carry a cell phone and also a short-range walkie-talkie (FRS in the US, I believe), as well as ID and a GPS unit. There's no guarantee that I can reach anyone, but at least I could try.

My wife, who's more of a wildlife photographer, thinks I'm being silly, but I think your story adequately illustrates that prudence is a good idea.

Those tops (or even simple iron-on high-reflectance patches) are also a good idea. I tend to go for a variety of the patches because what's quite obvious at one time of year can easily blend into the background in another season.

And both my wife and I find it's a lot more fun to go on photo shoots together.

Again, best wishes for a complete recovery.

@Level3.net

I priced those reflective bands on eBay, but since I'm not usually in the woods at night, and since there won't be a direct light hitting me like car lights...I don't see what they would reflect. But I guess it would be a good idea for other areas that I might shoot in the future.

I do have walkie talkies...that is a good suggestion. I react (they make me sick) to electromagnetic freqs from cell phones and things that contact cell towers, so GPS is out of the question, but I was going to take my cell phone (and leave it turned off) for 911 calls just in case anything should happen to me...but I couldn't find it that morning so left without it...sigh...you never think it happen to you...until it does. Usually I am very prepared for all emergencies...but not that morning...and not for that situation.
