Rattler : There could be an odd compatibility problem between the wireless card in the computer and the V* supplied router. It may be some weird transient handshake issue that knocks the two out of "sync".

The Linksys PC card in my notebook occasionally gets finicky and has intermittent communication problems with the Actiontec router at my daughter's house. It works without incident about 95% of the time there. Her house is far enough from any neighbors that I can not detect any other WLANs while I'm there. I never have a problem with it at home with my Linksys router and there are usually 4 - 5 other WLANs active, most of the time.
--
Never raise your hands to your kids.
New fios intall, problem with wireless internet

emg : I just got FIOS internet (and tv etc) installed yesterday. This is all new to me. I've been a subscriber to various cable packages for years and just used my own router.

I'm having a problem connecting my laptop to wireless. But it's really really weird.

I have a Win XP tabletpc w/ a Atheros AR5006X wireless card, 3.5 years old.

Here's what happens.

The router is in one room, I'm maybe 50 feet away max. I connect to the network, enter the wep key. It connects and shows at connected with a *very strong signal*. At no point does it ever have a weak signal. It works for maybe 20 seconds and then drops the IP!! I can't get it to renew an IP or connect to the internet any more :-( Every time it tries to connect after this, it can't acquire an IP.

Here's the weird part - I go stand 5 ft away from the router in the same room. It now gets the IP back and doesn't drop it. But if I leave the room to go 10 ft down the hall (putting me about 15 ft from the router, still with a very strong signal), it drops the IP again! And I can't get it back.

This is really frustrating. It only seems to be happening with this computer. I have a netbook also and it seemed to work fine on the other side of the house. I tried using both the Atheros and Windows wireless managers, doesn't make a difference :-(

I could understand if I was getting a weak signal, that would make perfect sense, but the signal is probably 30-35dB on the other side of the house, if not more.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
