Good appliance for boiling water?

I am looking to buy an appliance that boils water at home

Maybe someone who had one before... can recommend something...

I am looking at »www.amazon.com/exec/obid ··· v=glance but maybe it's too simple

maybe like an audio notification would be nice...

microwave/stove/fireplace/cooktop/etc. anything capable of bringing teh water to 212F will do the trick.

used to be you could get those little heater coils you dropped in a cup of coffee and they would do it. but i think the safety police ruined that.

We have something that looks similar, except the label says "Kitchen Gourmet". I think that's a picture of it on this page:
»www.fixya.com/support/p5 ··· electric
And yes, there is no notification when it is hot, other than being able to see the steam rising, or recognizing the sound of boiling water.

For my purposes, I mainly use this one:
»www.amazon.com/Sunbeam-6 ··· 00C3QSPQ
(actually an older model of that). It's great for instant coffee or tea. Just fill the cup with water, pour in, press the button, wait for it to boil, dispense. Again, there is no special notification when it has reached boiling, but when heating one cup it is fast enough that you can wait and watch without getting bored.

They are called immersion coils. Not sure if they are still being sold.

If you are just looking for something to make a cup or 2 of hot water then a Keurig coffee maker is great. We use ours all the time for hot chocolate. Also great for instant grits or oat meal. You can get a cup of hot water in about a minute or less. I really didn't think ours would get much use but my wife uses it almost daily.

If you're looking for something that will make a single (8-16oz.) cup of hot water at a time, perhaps one of these will do:
»www.target.com/Sunbeam-H ··· 00C3QSPQ

I have one at work... Great little gizmo for making a cup of tea, or "Cup-O-Noodles", etc...

(edit): Oops, nwrickert beat me to it...

We got one of those when our kitchen was being remodeled. That and a microwave were all we had to cook with for 2 months. That was 5 years ago and I still use that little gadget to boil water. It's quicker than the stove or microwave and I can tell by the sound when the water is boiling.

That thing is a toy. Get a real microwave oven. I have this at home. 2 cups boiling water in 1:30. Baked potato in 2:30 mins. Any TV dinner is starting to burn at 2:30. Baked potato is charcoal and smoking like a smokebomb at 4 mins (can't see to the back of the cooking cavity). Steam bagged fish is done in 6 mins tops from frozen.

2100 watts of RF energy, 3450 watts from the outlet. Needs 240v outlet. Thats a Panasonic commercial oven. Amana and Sharp also make nearly identical models. Samsung used to also make them. Sanyo might have made ones for the US market.

Cue Tim Allen grunting here....a little overkill, but nice suggestion!

If you have an electric stove the "electric kettle", I showed above, is better. The heating coil is immersed in the water.

The fist one I ever saw was in Ireland in the early 70's.

Useless info I just looked up

Arthur Leslie Large invented the electric kettle in 1922. General Electric introduced the electric kettle with an automatic cut-out in 1930.

Electric kettles don't typically boil the water. They get it close, but if boiling is what you need then a stove burner is the right tool for the job.

Pardon me, I may be old and stupid but I know boil from hot. You are speaking without knowing.
