[NFL] Jets to wear corporate patch on practice jerseys

First it will be advertising on practice uniforms and then I bet it will advance to game day uniforms....seems like everything is for sale today
___

The New York Jets are taking advantage of a new NFL rule this summer that will allow them to place a corporate logo on their practice jerseys as a source of additional revenue.

The rule allows teams to sell sponsorships on their practice jerseys, and the patches can be no larger than 3-by-4 inches.

The patch the Jets will wear starting in training camp features the logo of Atlantic Health, a New Jersey-based health care provider that owns naming rights on the team's training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Matt Higgins, the team's executive vice president of business operations, confirmed Tuesday the Jets will earn extra revenue. Houston and Green Bay are among other teams exploring similar options.

Hey, if Green Bay is gonna do this, theyre a hell of a lot more traditional than the Jets.

Soccer opened this door ages ago. Theyre the biggest walking billboards that ain't driving racecars.

A single 3 inch by 4 inch patch probably won't be too distracting at all. As long as it's a single patch.

And yes, everything's for sale nowadays.

This kind of thing never seemed to me a judicious use of advertising dollars.

First off, how many eyeballs are even going to see a practice jersey? They don't wear them in preseason games, do they?
So the only people who are going to see the logo are those who physically attend practice, and apparently you won't even be able to really tell what it is unless you're pretty close.
Maybe it'll show up in a photo now and then in the sports section of the newspaper or on ESPN or something.

Still, of the relatively few people who even see or notice it, what percentage of them are going to think, "Hey, look! Atlantic Health! I think I'll just rush right on over there and sign up!"

But . . . . I suppose that's why I'm not a marketing guy. (Thank God.)

I could never be a marketing guy either even though one of the most successful guys I know has been in that most of his life and is also a very successful restaurant owner..

I realize advertising and sponsorship is necessary but I can't stand how commercialism has taken over so much..It is one of the main reasons I don't watch television on a regular basis..

The older I become the more I get the idea of going into the woods to live somewhere...Kind of like the Unabomber lifestyle... but without the bomb fetish.

I just remember that without commercials and advertising, a lot of shit that's currently free won't be... like 99% of the Intarweb.

I pay Verizon $40 every month so I can use the "Intarweb".
$40 per month is not "free"-- not in the world I live in, anyway.

And I consider that a fair deal, btw.
Though I'm sure Verizon and every other company on this Earth would appreciate it if I still saw advertising from them anyway, I don't.

Yet Verizon still gets their 40 bucks every month-- so don't tell me it's advertising that makes the "Intarweb free".

Heh. Have you ever seen the logos that European hockey teams wear?

People don't have free internet. This is a bad argument or example to support your point.

Giants too. Timex, I think. I think Tomex will be the name of their practice facility and during season, timeouts will be "Timex Timeouts".

I always wondered if the national announcers are required to say that kind of thing and the corporate stadium names. What if they just blew that off?

They probably get some serious shit in the review since they're fucking with league revenue.

It is. For starters. Then it's 2 patches, then helmet advertisements. Eventually the stretcher crew will have an extra member, miked up, so that when they're taking a player off the field with a broken leg he can do a voiceover extolling the virtues of arthritis-strength tylenol.

Hey, maybe they could get John Madden to stand on the sidelines and say "Boom! Tough Actin' Tinactin" every once in a while.

As long as I live, I will never get that line out of my head. I have a habit of yelling "Boom!" when I finish or accomplish something, and often I can't help but follow it up with "Tough actin' Tinactin".

Madden, and to some extent that quote, will always be somewhere in my mind when talking about Football.
