One of the big reasons is the technology behind the SureWest network. Not all fiber networks operate in the same way. Most fiber networks out there, like Verizon, use a passive optical network. While Verizon uses gigabit speed on their network, it is very inefficient. SureWest, on the other hand, uses active Ethernet, providing a dedicated 100 Mbps bidirectional connection to each house in a switched network. While the overall speed is slower, it is much more efficient. Despite them not mentioning doing so, I believe they have changed their video signals from MPEG2 to MPEG4, adding to bandwidth efficiency. Can you tell me what area (or zip code) you are in Sac? I live near Exit 91 near I-80 and am wondering if they stated service in my area. A friend of mine used to live at 95818 near U and Alhambra and got service through them.
