And other ISPs can't to this because why? One of the big reasons is the technology behind the SureWest network. Not all fiber networks operate in the same way. Most fiber networks out there, like Verizon, use a passive optical network. While Verizon uses gigabit speed on their network, it is very inefficient. SureWest, on the other hand, uses active Ethernet, providing a dedicated 100 Mbps bidirectional connection to each house in a switched network. While the overall speed is slower, it is much more efficient. Despite them not mentioning doing so, I believe they have changed their video signals from MPEG2 to MPEG4, adding to bandwidth efficiency. So other ISPs can't do this because they don't have the infrastructure behind their network to allow for such efficiency. |
