Re: Where is documentation on SpeedStream 5262 (060-5262-006)?

You may have a onboard Ethernet adapter that is not able to send the commands if the DSL Modem tab is not showing up and you are not blocking access by a Firewall on the PC. This FAQ covers that a bit.

»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ »EnterNet 300 does not show the DSL Modem tab for my 5260 or 5360?

The 5260 works with Bridged or PPPoE DSL lines. It only supports G.DMT, ANSI T1.413 and depending on Firmware G.Lite out of the many DSL Standards.

For it to communicate with the DSLAM the VPI/VCI pair (aka the Virtual Circuit) has to be confirmed and corrected as needed to match what VC the ISP is setup to deliver service over. Once you have the correct VPI/VCI set, you can remove the EnterNet 300 software (its not needed for the PPPoE on a DHCP Account) and it will work, keeping the new VC settings in non-volatile RAM so that the setting changes are not lost even after power outages/power cycling. The VC change is a one time deal unless you move the Modem later to a provider that uses a different VPI/VCI pair.

Doctor:

I'm OK with the PCI addin adapter, but unclear on the MAC filtering. I'm running under Windows Server 2003 SP2. No firewall active, no internet filtering. But still no device tab.

No services from ISP (sonic.net) using loging/password screen. sonic.net demands bridged connections, and does not deliver PPPoE connectivity, so don't expect to see anything here with the connectoid other than access to the device.

Any suggestion here?

You are just using the EnterNet 300 software to check/change the VC settings (VPI/VCI). After that and once you have it on an active line, you would set your PC to DHCP and it would pull what ever IP you are supposed to get from Sonic (Dynamic or Static) unless they gave you specific settings to use in your LAN connection TCP/IP properties.

I found this info:

»sonic.net/support/ss/broadmax/HSA300A-2/
quote:
The "VPI/VCI" should be specified as 0/35 on all newer DSL circuits and 8/35 on older DSL circuits.

Doctor:

There must be some confusion here, then. The link to the instructions you provided are for accessing and setting a modem that has a web-based GUI interface. The 5262 lacks this interface, is my understanding. That's why I'm trying to use Enternet. Enternet evidently has MAC-level addressing, which allows it to access the hardware it is connected to irrespective of the ip/mask assignments. The problem is that I'm not getting the device tab, which as your earlier link indicated may be due to MAC-level filtering on my machine.

No confusion. I did not use the instruction link for a unrelated modem for anything other than to simply obtain what the correct VPI/VCI setting should be for Sonic.net the ISP. That's all. If you already knew the proper VC values needed then I apologize for adding info that you don't need.

You would need to use a PC with a PCI Ethernet card along with the EnterNet Software if your current PC with onboard Ethernet does not show a DSL Modem tab.

Once you get the Modem set to the correct VC pair, you uninstall the EnterNet 300 Software as you no longer have any use for it.

You would have to ask Sonic.net how your PC needs to be configured after you get the Modem sorted out.

Your properties sheet shows version $2.1.0(7). I've installed from file Enternet300v1.5c_sp2.exe, which displays as version 1.5C dated Mar 6, 2002. This is lower rev than yours, yet later date. The display is different color (tan) as well. Any idea what's up with this?

It is an example image and the Firmware version isn't anything related to the EnterNet Software, it is the Firmware on the Modem that has its revision shown after it connects. The image was from a Win98 PC with a different color scheme than Server 2003.

There's a very good chance that your 060-5262-006 is a sbc modem.
The factory vpi/vci is 0/35 for the sbc 060-5262-006
The version date for enternet 1.5C is wide

Thank you for the screen shots. I don't know if its an SBC modem or not, as I just happened to have received it randomly and am using it as a test. Your screen shot looks like mine, except that it has the DSL Modem tab. SBC I think supports PPPoE connectivity, whereas sonic.net does not.

Doctor:

I've pretty much exhausted my patience and the capabilities of my three systems here to access this modem via Enternet. If it indeed does MAC-level addressing, I'm not seeing it here, as I'm not able to get it to communicate with the hardware.

The two Windows XP systems both have onboard NICs, so evidently that rules them out. The Windows 2003 Server has a PCI NIC, but perhaps at some level it is doing MAC-level filtering. I've got a Win98 system that I'm tempted to use this on, but for the moment I'm abandoning this effort. Thanks for your help with this.

I do not know if the EnterNet 300 software will work now that I think about you using Server 2003 since XP (and earlier) is the latest OS the EnterNet 300 1.5C will support by the documents I've read.

Try the Win98 PC.

I've been in touch with tech support at sonic.net already on the issue of accessing a modem's web GUI while in bridge mode attached to your system, both on the phone and via subsequent email support. I'm afraid they people who handled the question did not appear to understand the problem. I arrived at the solution last night, and will post it here as soon as I have time.
The Modem doesn't have a Web GUI or Telnet and it is only in Bridge Mode as there is no other mode for it to change to being a Bridge all the time. Only the EnterNet Software will communicate with it and allow changes to be made to the Bridge Modems settings (if needed).

Have you just tried to use the Modem as it is?

Are all the LEDs green on the Modem when it is plugged into the wall and hooked up to the phone line?

Has the Sonic.net DSL service already been activated?

Does Sonic.net need the MAC ID printed on the Modem's label to authorize its access to their Network via DHCP?

What setup instructions did you get from Sonic.net for your PC settings?

Doctor:

The comments I made about web GUI access related to a different but similar issue than the one discused in this particular thread. I'll post the solution in a separate thread.

This modem works exactly as advertised, no problems. What started as a search for documentation ended in the attempt to access the PVC setting with Enternet 300. No need to access them with sonic.net, evidently, since the modem works fine. But in other thread it has been noted that ISPs may have been using the PVC settings (0*35 vs 0*38 or 0*0?) to link the modem to their network and render them unususable on another ISP's network. I was just interested in addressing that capability with Enternet 300.

I may try Win98 -- but this is really marginal at this point, except as a point of closure.

Thanks again for your help. You are a one-man ENI support staff -- I home somebody at Siemens is paying attention, if not paying you directly somehow.

Earthlink and other ISPs also used the 5260s and the Extended Reach 060-5262-00X part numbered units. There were even Model 5263 with part number 060-5263-001 given out as seen here »cosmosing.com/classified/-1_Unit···_00.html

Doctor Olds:

Seems I can't drop this. I hooked up the 5262 to a Win98SE machine and installed Enternet 300 1.5c. But still no modem tab.

So my question is: Will Enternet 300 communicate with the modem if it isn't hooked up to the internet? That is, just unplug the cable to the DSL phone line -- in my case, I get no DSL Modem tab. Do you happen to know? Seems to me I should get something here, even if there's no connection to the internet.

Yes, EnterNet 300 works regardless of having a DSL signal or Not as you are communicating to the LAN side of the Modem, not the WAN side.

I don't know why it is giving you so much trouble, but it does work on the 5262 as seen here:

»5262/5262 All lights on but will not connect
