Where can I buy a coated mercury Vapor bulb?

Local at least?

I was going to place my order today at 1000blubs.com however I forgot it takes 5-7 days to get it and I will be on vacation so I will be unable to pick it up.

I don't think I've seen any at lowes or home depot.. all have just been the clear.

Most electrical supply houses will have them. FWIW, the coating does very little to actually improve the color. They also make replacement fluorescent spirals with mogul bases that are matched to a 175W MV ballast.

I added that advice because MV lamps are terribly inefficient (almost as bad as incandescent), and upgrading should always be a consideration.

How do those spirals work out for you? Decent output and all?

I know it's not efficient.. but as you know when people get old and set in ways she does not want to change the fixure and the fluorescent bulbs from what I can tell are ok but don't last as long and color is not an issue.

Well, then you don't need coated lamps if color is not an issue.

I wished she installed a HID or at least a Sodium vapor for the rear of the house. The yard is way too big for a single 175W MV I had to double check that it was indeed on because it was so dim (she had the bulb replaced last year)

And I'm sure all types of nasties would happen if you don't replace the whole fixture to one that supports the proper bulb.

Try McMaster-Carr Co. They ship same day via UPS and have warehouses all over the US.

Except for the special CLF's lamps to replace the MV, the ballasts pretty much are not interchangeable (wattage or lamp type).

Funny this thread popped up again. I'm taking the bucket out tomorrow to change a bunch of HPS fixtures over to CFL in a parking lot.
