Wireless Coverage/propagation?

Does anyone know of any programs or web sites that can help in modeling what a particular frequency, like 3.65GHz or similar, propagation and coverage will be for a particular area given a tower height and such. I have recently been using www.heywhatsthat.com to model respective tower heights and to see what area can then be seen, but I expect this is mostly a LOS application of the program. I am curious to see any NLOS coverage maps and get a little more exacting idea of the area covered. Now I realize that there are many variables, but assume you are only in a hilly, no tall buildings area in the country. I also understand that the math involved here may take a small mainframe, but if anyone has some suggestions please feel free to say them.

I would also like to get some real hardware in the 3.65GHz spectrum to do some outdoor testing, but it is all so expensive and I just want to do real world analysis. Is there anything out there that can transmit 3.65 and receive that can be rented or bought cheaply just for a study of the area? Money is tight now, but hopefully one I get more things worked out it won't be such an issue..

Why not Try mikrotik boards RB411 and some Ubiquiti cards?

And man that Radio mobile program is hard to get terrain data into..

Post your coordinates here or pm me. Include the following: ap and cpe antenna height, radio specs for ap and cpe, antenna gain at ap and cpe, operating frequency range.

Give me 48 hours or so and I will have a map for you. I can kick out point to point profiles very fast, but getting terrain data for ptmp coverage maps makes the process take much longer.

Oh also be aware the map i give you won't factor land usage (trees, buildings, etc) so I guess you really won't have a true picture of near line of sight and non line of sight.

I wouldnt use 3.65 for near/non los anyway, personally.

 I know 3.65 isn't best for NLOS, but I don't expect a lot of people to be that way. Even the cell network goes out here in slow rolling valleys, so I expect LOS to be obtained by most since people are spread out. I cannot see what would be great though for NLOS as 900MHz is noisy in general, and licensed frequencies would cost a fortune. I figure 3.65 is empty by me now so use while available.

Thanks. Now I've got everything but the SRTM tiles downloaded. Isn't dialup a joke! I should be able to download one 30 Mb zip file a night. I'll be done in less than a week.

The Ubnt XR3 is using a 802.11 protocol, but I am looking for 802.16.

Does anyone know where to get a spectrum analyzer.. and not 2.4 or 5.8GHz I am looking to scan 1.5-6Ghz? Anything cheaper for a laptop or a place to rent them from?

There are some good howto's that have you up and running in a few minutes.

I've been having trouble just downloading the area terrain data, as it is NOT doing it automatically, despite following the directions of editing the map files, ect....

I've got RM up and running. Also having trouble with terrain data. I borrowed a Verizon wireless usb and spent 3 hours downloading SRTM tiles (1/3 arc resolution) from the first site on the list at cplus.org (overkill I know, I always go for more than I need). The program says the data is missing and won't download from internet despite settings. I'm using the tutorial on pizon.org. Decided I shouldn't have unzipped with WinZip. I had saved the files so I unzipped with 7-ZIP, same thing. Now I am in the process of downloading "SRTM finished 1 arc second" files from USGS. At least these zipped files are 1/4 the size, hope the they work. I can download better resolution later. If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong feel free to speak up!

1 arc second is about the best resolution you will get.

Thanks for the info. I did finally get some RF plots done. After downloading many different formats I found two that worked. The GTOPO30(30 arc sec-1km) from usgs.gov, link on pizon.org and the The SRTM(1 arc sec-30m) from recordist.com, link on cplus.com, first choice under second heading.
