said by sailor :I know of a guy who ran a sleaze buy here - pay here operation in S. Florida. He would pick up cars from auction and then sell them. The down payment he would ask for is what he paid for the car at auction but he would price the car at 3x's what he paid....He would then require weekly payments and that way each weekly payment made would be pure profit to him and he would sit back and wait until someone would miss or be late on a weekly payment and then he would send his gorilla to repo the car. Many times he would re-sell the same car over and over due to people being late eventually on a weekly payment. This same character also got into the loan for car title scheme and he got cars that way when those who borrowed only a couple of hundred dollars on their cars worth say $1k defaulted on the weekly payment. Exactly. That is why I stay away from Buy Here Pay Here places. Every single one I have ever been (never bought) have been rip offs... Car prices were 3x KBB value most of the time. Most of them want a high downpayment and want you to pay $100 a week, or $150 every two weeks and only want cash or money order.
The place I am looking into is a very small family own lot which does their financing on lot. They usually don't sell for much more than the KBB value and have 0% interest. Like I said, my mom got a car there several years ago and didn't have any problems and they always treated her awesome. It's also just regular monthly payments like any car loan. They take regular checks

| I'd say being in the position you are that sticking to that lot your mom had good experience is the way to go but if you are going to get into the near $5k range I would pass on that Taurus and look at the new stock they will be getting in. You are going to pay top dollar to get into a ride there but that is unfortunately the position your in but I would for that kind of money on payments look for something same size or even smaller and try to get under 100k miles and something with a as solid as possible carfax history. Does that lot provide you with a free car fax report on the cars you've looked at? If not, ask them for one. |

I didn't take any pictures of it and now wish I did.
Either way, like I said, I'll check out the new stock and see what they have. |

| reply to MJimLay If you can come up with a $950 down payment, you should be able to buy a decent car outright from a PP for about the same amount.
$1,000-$1200 will buy a decent driver on craigslist around here. One price, no payments. You are not going to get any kind of warranty from that dealer anyway. -- We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us. |

However, what really bothers me is part of my downpayment is borrowed money and if I buy a old beater and it quit a week later, I'd feel like crap because that money was given to me to find a decent running car. I don't want to feel like I had wasted that money.
Sure, the exact same can happen at a dealership, but the chances are less likely as I would be able to afford a "better" car.
It's also hard to find anything decent under $2500 in my area. It seems anything under $2500 here needs a massive amount of work, or has a blown transmission, etc. Plus most of the cars I see for under $2500 have 150,000 or more miles whereas this Lumina has 88,000 and Taurus has 113,000.
The upside would be that my insurance would be cheaper and no car payments... but it's just a risk I really don't want to take.
Erm... Now I am getting myself all confused. $400 a month is a lot of money for car payment + insurance. |

they do have "interest" charges, they are just built into the cost of the car or payment...$5k for that car is high, and i like my Taurus...that is the most basic model available (SE, cloth interior, Vulcan V6, etc)...it may have even been a fleet vehicle at one point...i know you don't have much in the way of options, and i am not familiar with what goes for what where you live, but to be honest with you, i would bet that guy paid $2000 for that car...not because Taurus' are crappy cars, but there are tons of them, and being a domestic, the resale value is low on them...have you checked out a basic model Hyundai Accent, new from the dealership??...up here, they are $9995, plus you can get 0% financing for 3 years...and they have a 5 year warranty...i know you said your credit isn't great, but it might be worth a shot...car companies want to sell new cars, so they might be able to help out a bit.
your options may be limited, but if you have had good experiences from this dealer before, it may be the best choice, even if those types of places aren't the best places to buy from (in terms of pricing). -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

Same way Payday Loan places, Rent to Own, etc. are not the best places to shop or get $. Anyone will loan anyone money, but it may be at 25-90% interest.
Sure it's sleazy but when you serve the sleazy side of the world you have to operate that way or go out of business. |

| reply to MJimLay I test drove the Lumina and Taurus.
Result: JUNK!
Lumina was very low on water. Transmission fluid was brown and smelt burnt. AC blower does not work, the blower is very loud and doesn't push much air. Blinkers did not work.
Taurus Transmission fluid was also brown and smelt burnt. During the test drive, it shift hard one time. Under the hood, there were many new parts making me wonder if it is a lemon.
They also had a 1996 grand jeep cherokee I test drove which had 135,000 miles... fully loaded, including leather. Everything appeared to work fine. It did need a paint job and did pull to the right.
I went to several other car lots and the day was filled with cars not starting, and many other problems.
I did run across a 1998 Honda Accord which was beautiful (other than a small fender bender) it was MINT inside, looked almost new. It drove almost new as well. Leather, Sunroof, spoiler... It was NICE. However, it had brake issues and AC didn't blow very cold. It would have been $1000 down and $300 a month for 2.5 years, which I thought was a bit much.
I also ran across a 2003 Buick Century with 63,000 miles. The inside had several cosmetic issues (paint coming off speaker covers, panels loose, etc) and when breaking, there was a knocking sound from the back end.
I'm back to square A again. |

| you know what?
i don't know what the public transportation is like in your city, but why not just take the bus and save up some money in the mean time??
from what it sounds like, most of the cars you are going to get are going to be crap anyway...there are good cheap cars out there, but you have to know where to find them and who has them...most likely, you won't find them at one of those "we finance everyone" places...unfortunately, there is just too much risk, so they need get the cheapest thing they can find...like i said, i wouldn't be surprised if they paid more than $2000-$2500 for that Taurus, max...again, they are decent cars, but i don't know if THAT one is a decent one...the transmission fluid should have been flushed at about 60,000 miles (which it probably wasn't done, and it is now at twice that)...many of those vehicles have been poorly maintained, which is why they are so cheap...not cheap for you to buy, but cheap for those dealers to buy, so they can turn around and charge a premium price for them, because they finance everyone.
think of all the money you will save if you just get a bus pass for a year...no car payment, no insurance payment...and the bus pass is probably comparable to what you would be paying for gas. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

1 edit | I'd be open to taking the bus. However, it's not possible.
1. Bus Service is provided by ECAT and is only within the Pensacola City Limits
2. There is no bus service where I live (Beach Haven/Bayou Grande in Escambia County)
3. My job is located 35 miles from me in East Milton (Santa Rosa County) in the middle of nowhere (cell service is even poor)
So, simply put... bus services is not provided where I live, nor where my job is. |

| blechh...those cars look horrible...and $3700 for an almost 20 year old caddie with that atrocious red interior??...that car should be $500 at most...there are tons of places around here where you can get "beaters" for under $1000...it looks like the places down there use those beaters as "bait" for people with bad credit and try and unload them for $950 down and $300/month for 2 years...that should be a crime. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

I agree. It's hard to find anything here that is somewhat decent under $1000. However, I have found a few possibles. I have found a 1981 Ford F150 with new transmission, engine, and tires for $850. I found a 1992 Van (with some rear end body damage but drives fine) for $900, and found a 1997 Nissan Altima with worn shocks/struts for $900.
I still have a full week of looking so I am just going to take my time and get the best I can. I do not want to deal with these buy here pay here places and the way I look at it, if I can pay cash for a "beater" just to get me back for 4-6 months, I can save my money and I'd have $4000+ for a better/2nd car. I think that is the wise thing to do instead of going to a buy here pay here place.
I drove a 1997 Chevy Lumina today which had 114,000 miles and was in decent shape for $1200... I liked it a lot, but on the test drive the tempature went all the way up for a minute or two, then went back down to normal levels. I figure it's just a bad thermostat, but not worth the risk in case it was about to blow a head gasket or crack a block. It's shame because it was such a nice car other that.
I also looked at a 1985 suburban today which had a disel engine for $1000, but it was complete trash inside and the dude never signed the title over to himself so it just seemed a little odd. Plus that would be a really bad gas hog.
I'm sure I'll find something... I'm not about to deal with these buy here pay here places unless it's completely last resort. |

Plus that would be a really bad gas hog. He is what they call free-lance individual wholesalers. Licensed dealers, especially the buy here - pay here lots in FL will buy at auctions and also will buy trades from connections they have with new car dealers.
Individual wholesalers are usually not licensed as car dealers. Many are one person operation doing it part-time. They will see a car for sale that they feel they can flip for a profit and then they will buy that car and they tell the seller of the vehicle to leave the 'title open' which means the seller will sign off on the title as the seller but the person buying the car will not enter his or her info as buyer on it...'Leave it open'...They ask that due to they have no intentions of keeping the car and don't want to pay for tags, registering the vehicle, insurance etc.......
If you purchased this Suburban from him he would give you the title and it would already have been signed by the person he got the car from...You then would just have to fill in the buyer section ( you )......And when this is all presented to the FL DMV, the guy you bought the Suburban from doesn't exist....
I would strongly suggest to protect yourself to make sure the person you are buying a used vehicle from is listed as the owner on the title and to make sure there are no current liens on the vehicle. |

2 edits | I am now the proud owner of a:
1998 Chevy Lumina (Police Package) 84,500 Miles
It has the 3.8 L engine with dual exhaust. It has a few minor issues that need attention, but overall it's in pretty decent shape considering it's age and how much I paid for it It has plenty of power, idles very quite, and transmission shifts smoothly. I am currently using it as my daily driver
I only gave $900 for the car which I think is a steal for the miles and condition. Some of the buy here pay here places had worse cars than this one... one of the ones I looked at even had a salvage title. That car would have been $1200 down, $300 a month, and $200 a month for insurance. OUCH!
This car.... $35 a month for insurance and it's paid off. |

| Not bad .... now, since you were planning on having a car payment, you really should set aside some amount every month (even a fraction of the $250+ you were planning to spend) for repairs, should they arise.
Regarding the speedo and the "CERTIFIED" label, what is that for ? I've seen cop cars that have "CALIBRATED", meaning they can 'tail' another car and use their speedo to write a speeding ticket. Is that the same ? |

I'm planning on saving as much as possible (hopefully $1000 a month) to make repairs on this car and to buy a 2nd car (truck or SUV) to have as a backup. I was just going to keep this car for 4-6 months as a "beater" but the more I drive it around and everything the more I just want to fix it up and keep it due to the low miles and everything. It gets pretty decent gas milage as well. |
