BTW, it's 140 bytes, not 160

The SMS buffer is actually 140 bytes. 140 bytes * 8 bits/byte = 1120 bits. In English-speaking North America, the 7-bit ASCII character set is sufficient for our needs. Using 7 bits, we can squeeze 1120 / 7 = 160 CHARACTERS into the 140-byte buffer. In Europe, where you run into accented characters, Pound-sign, Euro-sign, etc, they use 8 bits per character. That allows 140 CHARACTERS in their SMS messages. Pity poor Asia, with double-byte characters; they can only get 70 CHARACTERS into the 140-byte SMS buffer.
