Heh, well, from the responses above, this mostly served to prove that it's a duopoly for "wired" service. I did notice Speakeasy (who end up deploying via Covad, right?) offer a DSL+VoIP package that's probably somewhat competitive, as far as including the 'premium' feature of static IPs. Maybe some lesser-knowns also have something like that.

I have U-Verse, and the package I have is called the U-200 package, and it gets about 200 channels. The top package is the U-450 package. I'm not sure if that's 450 channels, but I think that it's pretty close!
I've had it since November of 2007, and aside from having to call technical support a couple times for internet issues and once for a set top box issue, have had very good luck.

With AT&T U-Verse you can get 18/2. With Cablevision you can get 30+/5. U-Verse has the whole-house DVR which kicks ass (I have it now). Until last year I've had Cablevision and I was sorry to leave it when I moved. I'd take the TV service of AT&T over Cablevision and teh internet of Cablevision over AT&T... |

If you're close enough to a telco central office where an ILEC such as Covad has equipment, you can get DSL from that ILEC or one of its resellers. |

Huh. Guess this means the residential areas closest to the highway will have that option first... but I'm not sure if that's worth the tradeoffs of living closer to the highway.
I noticed subcontractors stringing what looked like fiber up past our office to the neighborhood(s) we're looking at last year, in the "middle of town a mile or two north of the highway" area, but that's probably for U-Verse or some special unobtainium deployment. |

| Tossing this here since it'd be a bit OT for the SNET/SBC/AT&T forum...
It looks like I (via the bit of my family I live with) may be moving down to Stamford shortly, and I'm tasked with figuring out the whole ISP/TV/phone morass. There's certainly something to be said for sticking with Ma Bell  but I'm finding it's hard to get a complete and serious list of all the options for broadband in CT. (Note, for instance, that the top results in DSLR/BBR's 'Database' are all Covad resellers two states away.)
Obviously, there's always:
* AT&T
* Incumbent Cable Provider [Seems like Cablevision/Optimum in Stamford]
...but beyond that, all I'm aware of is Netplex still alive and kicking with a DSL product tightly coupled to AT&T's mode d'emploi. I thought I'd heard of Verizon sending tendrils into Fairfield County but apparently they don't reach Stamford yet.
So as far as high speed Internet, are there any options worth considering that are missing from this list? Or is this just the (condensed, duopotastic) state of the market these days?
For our purposes I'm open to considering services up to $100/mo if they'd break 10mbit by a fair margin... or at least, it'd be good to know if they exist. |
