Two things. I've never tried it, but Second Life might be right up your alley.

Also, if you try wow, try rolling a toon on a RP (role playing) server. You might find people much more willing to socialize there.

Problem with second life is that the only thing that there is to do is have toon sex.

Though linden Labs to working to change that, as companies have pulled out due to the adult nature of the game.

Ultima Onlime was kinda like what you stated. You could hang out in taverns, drinking and pinching the serving wenched bottoms. Or go mine so ore and make some armour or weapons. Or get a group together and kill a whole buch of deer of hides to work tailoring skills.

Or invent someone over to help you design and decorate your UO house.

Or just group up and go to a dungeon and have fun.
