2 edits | WRT160NL LinuxPowered is here. Can a WRT610NL be far behind?
I just noticed that the WRT160NL Linux-Powered Linksys router was just announced. It supports FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS USB attached drives. I could not help myself from "speculating" that a WRT610NL might be not be far behind.

Richmond, BC | The WRT610N already runs Linux inside it. You can download the GPL code off the Linksys site.
I believe it can handle NTFS drives, but it's something you really shouldn't do... |

Both devices are already linus based - dd-wrt runs great on them.
Possilble reason for this announcment is that they may be planning on offering a neutered version (vxworks, less mem) much as they did with the WRT54G. The WRT54GL is the linux version. |

DD-WRT does support some Atheros chipsets (i.e. Accton's La Fonera line-up), though I can't think of a Linksys device that has used Atheros before. The OpenWRT people seem to be salivating over the design, electronic design that is (physically it has all the appeal of a soap dish) so if can be done they will likely be the first to port a working firmware. |

I guess the big difference is the 160NL has the Atheros chipset, which has a far more "open" set of drivers than the closed-source Broadcom chipset previously used.
As in, Atheros has promised open source drivers, and some have already been released. This allows any Linux to actually follow the latest kernel releases, rather than be limited to what Broadcom provides. |
