MLPPP is enabled on their end, because the hardware needs to support the encryption and line binding that MLPPP uses.

The problem is that most residential routers don't have that capability built in because essentially nobody prior to 2008 used it. The reason why the WRT54GL is favoured is because it has a large amount of memory which can be used to load a custom firmware onto it, which allows the router to take advantage of more advanced technology, such as MLPPP.
