1 edit | [TWC] Samsung H3090 DVR in NYC whats your review Since the Samsung H3090 is now Available in NYC, If you have it whats your opinion
As for Me We got the Samsung and We love it, It is Much faster in the Dvr functions, the Picture quality is great ,We have had no pixilation or Audio drop outs like we had with the SA 8300 hdc, The Only glitch we had was Caller Id on TV it was not working or in the setup Menu, but a quick call to twc had it working on the new box. also it worked great with my Logitech Harmony Remote, My Overall review is if you Have a SA-8300 HDC and can swap for the Samsung H3090 do it over all an excellent box .the best we have had from TWC in 15 years with them

| Re: [TWC] Samsung H3090 DVR in NYC whats your review So far I love the box. I replaced an HDC as well and it is light years better then that box.
The DVR is a little slow on fast forward, rewind and play commands.
I also did not need to reprogram my Harmony remote. The box is also all black so it matched my entertainment stand. I highly recommend this box!!!

| I also have the H3090. It is really fast when switching channels, loading DVR list, and such but I notice sometimes that when I turn the DVR back on I see a huge start over button on the screen and also shows an over sized Guide on my TV screen if I press the guide button. I fix that by rebooting the box. That's the only bug I notice so far on the H3090. PS: I use a HDMI cable to connect the DVR to the TV. | |

If you have the Atlas remote from Universal Electronics try this:
1. Press and Hold in the SETUP key until the RED flashes twice and then release the SETUP key 2. Enter in 9-9-3 3. Press and release the Device key from which you want volume controlled. (i.e. TV)

| said by mckenna797 :you are very welcome. so how do you like the Samsung what is your favorite thing about it i think my fav thing so far has to be the speed of the box. my friends have the old 8300 HDC and the 3050, and one thing i didn't like about their boxes is the speed of switching channels. Their boxes seems to lag when switching from a SD channel to a HD channel and vice versa. I don't think it's their TV's as one has a Samsung and another has a Sony.
the 3090 seemlessly switches from SD to HD.
one complaint i do have is the channel jump within the PG. say i want to jump to the 700 section of the PG from the 50s section. when i press the numbers in, it displays '7' and then switches back to the current channel number and then '70' and back again and then '700'. then it actually jumps to the section. i guess this is Mystro at it's finest. I still have a 8300 for a SD tv in a diff room and it's running Passport. In that guide, it just shows the values you presses, not switching back and forth.

| Re: [TWC] Samsung H3090 DVR in NYC whats your review I was more thinking about recording onto your PC's Hard Drive, so that you can edit, encode, store etc... SA was easy to record but the PQ was pretty bad. The bottom line is, if the bitrate is the same as before, the only thing that could possibly improve the PQ is either filters or a dedicated gfx processor that does some magic. It's really the bitrate where its at. | |

This enables the AC3 over HDMI setting. That will get you to hardware diagnostics. In addition there is software diagnostics mode. Hold down "select" on the remote for a 10 count, then hit the down key.
It may have been mentioned elsewhere, but in one of the password protected areas of the Hardware Diagnostics, there is a setting to enable AC3 over hdmi. The default setting is "no".
Yesterday, I swapped out a SA8300HD (passport) for the 3090. I'm connected via component and optical audio. Although I don't have any hard measurements to support it, the picture looks better to me from the 3090. I've enabled all output resolutions and am allowing my Panny plasma (1080p)to do any conversion. The menus/channel changes seem very responsive and I'm getting used to the lag on rw/ff to play. About the only complaint I have (and it's extremely minor), is the SA8300 used to have an input on the back to accept input from the rf receiver on my universal remote. The 3090 doesn't have this, so I've had to attach a sticky emitter on the face of the 3090 over the ir receiver. Also, I'm considering opening the unit up and swapping out the 160gb drive for something larger.

I used the same type drive as the 160 (Seagate Pipeline). So far, everything is working perfectly. The box booted up and formatted the hd automatically. All settings and scheduled recordings were remembered. The entire process including format took about 20 minutes. The only necessary tools are a Torx T10 security driver for the case and a phillips head screwdriver for the drive caddie. I'll give it a good workout over the next week or so and post back.

Yes, please do. The Pipeline HD series also has a 500GB available. And the Pipeline HD Pro is a 1TB unit. You have to wonder if any or all of these would work. -- The god of the religious is the one that they were programmed to believe in, and the god the atheist doesn't believe in isn't the God that is.

Realistically, the 320GB gives me around 40 hours of HD and that's plenty as I'm not hanging on to recordings. I really just wanted something that would let me have about a week's worth of my regular recordings and then let me record a game or two without programs being automatically deleted. It'll also come in handy around vacation time.

| Re: [TWC] Samsung H3090 DVR in NYC whats your review Its a shame too. My opinion: too many customers lost to FiOS and they can't get rid of the current stock of 8300HDC. People move to FiOS and turn their old boxes in and then they have more and more.
Theory: If Time Warner Cable in Staten Island IS really part of New York's Time Warner Cable, why wouldn't they have the same database in their computers to just take boxes into another borough and swap out there. Starting thread for this.

| No more active dual tuners?
I am in Queens, NYC. This morning at 10:30AM EST I noticed my box was doing something funny. It had lines on it instead of the time. I was heading out and didn't think anything of it. I came back and turned it on to the new Mystro UI. I hate it, but that's not my issue here; as I knew it was only a matter of time.
So I've accepted this fate, but here is one thing that REALLY is making me irate. On the Passport system, I could keep my active dual tuners on 2 channels, without having to record one. I mean that I could watch 2 different channels, and as long as I didn't change the channel on either, and I only used the SWAP button, the last hour on each channel would be saved. This is EXTREMELY convenient, as I make heavy use of my DVR. I NEVER watch anything live. If 2 shows are starting, I will watch one, then when that goes to commercial, swap it to the other, and watch that one. This is of course not for something like movies, but when I have talk shows on ESPN, I play them while I do my chores. But if there's a movie I want to see, I let it build up on the other tuner, then I start to watch it, and can of course FF through all the commercials -- very convenient; as this is the service I pay for.
Now, getting back to today, with the new Mystro, everytime I swap it, the other tuner no matter what reverts to NY1. I checked settings and I have the power on channel set as "last channel", which is what did the trick under Passport (it was NY1 before). But, not luck this time. With all this being said, I want to know if anyone has ANY suggestions, better than these I can think of:
1. Record the "other" show, while watching one. This would effectively accomplish what I want, but this eats up valuable DVR space. As I mentioned earlier, if I have an ESPN talk show on, I would have to record a 2-hour movie to watch that. Whereas on Passport, I would just swap it, then start to watch the movie without eating DVR space.
2. Is there a way for the old swap function to work under Mystro. Does the new H3090 work with swap? This would of course be the best solution.
3. Would Tivo be a better alternative? Meaning, would Tivo store the last hour of the 2 active channels, without having to record one?
If it matters, I have a SA8300HD, that was on Passport until this morning. Any comments or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

| TW NYC installed the 3090 a couple of weeks ago for me and connected the box to my SONY XBR 3 using HDMI cables. My experience of the 3090 so far has not been satisfactory. Previusly I had the 8300HDC which constantly froze and broke up, particularly when tuned to channel 715 (CNBC). The 3090 has not remedied that problem and has exhibited some of its own. These include (1) decoupling of the image and sound (i.e., the sound is a couple of seconds ahead/behind the image); (2) box arbitrarily breaks up the recording of a one hour program into three segments of various durations; and (3) saved programs are automatically deleted "to make space" for other programs when all saved programs together did not amount to more that 20% capacity. Is anybody else having these problems, and what are you doing about them? | |

A service man was sent out and gave me me a new 3090 but this time it only had the 160gb drive. Also the record light doesn't work. It does record though and the 2 way on demands work. Now I will have to go back to the center and hope I get another 3090 with 320gb.
