A HD-PVR by Hauppauge will work. You can also use a DVD recorder. You can't directly copy the recordings due to them being tied to the DVR. The DVR uses a proprietary FS that can't be read by a computer.

TW NYC installed the 3090 a couple of weeks ago for me and connected the box to my SONY XBR 3 using HDMI cables. My experience of the 3090 so far has not been satisfactory. Previusly I had the 8300HDC which constantly froze and broke up, particularly when tuned to channel 715 (CNBC). The 3090 has not remedied that problem and has exhibited some of its own. These include (1) decoupling of the image and sound (i.e., the sound is a couple of seconds ahead/behind the image); (2) box arbitrarily breaks up the recording of a one hour program into three segments of various durations; and (3) saved programs are automatically deleted "to make space" for other programs when all saved programs together did not amount to more that 20% capacity. Is anybody else having these problems, and what are you doing about them?

I just got the 3090 to replace one of my 8300HDs (one of them screwed up during the navigator update), and comparing the both - I think the navigator software on the 8300HD is a little faster and smoother. For starters, when I go to an On Demand channel - on the 8300HD, the list would come up instanteously whereas the 3090, it tells me to wait while it loads.

Other than that - I do occasionally get no audio when switching to an HD channel, and I have to switch back to a SD channel and then back to get the audio back.

The menus and everything on the 8300HD also fade in and out smoothly which I don't get on the 3090.

But otherwise, I'm happy with it enough. It's so strange to have to go to the Diagnostics just to get 5.1 audio through HDMI, though. If it wasn't for the internet, how would I have known? I'm sure the Reps wouldn't have known. LOL

Only 23rd street has them. You might get either one. You can easily find out on the top of the box.

A few weeks ago I picked up a 3090 at the Queens Center Mall with 320gb. I couldn't get the on demand channels to work. It wouldn't connect 2 way. A service man was sent out and gave me me a new 3090 but this time it only had the 160gb drive. Also the record light doesn't work. It does record though and the 2 way on demands work. Now I will have to go back to the center and hope I get another 3090 with 320gb. I had an external hard drive that worked with my old 8300hd but doesn't work now even though the 3090 recognizes it.

23rd street is out of 3090's. They'll get some in on Tuesday. This time with 320 GB HDD's.

How can one determine whether they are eligible for this new box? I'm in Astoria.

You can get a new box whenever you want. You don't have to be "eligible."

I have been using the Samsung 3090 for about a week and like it better than the SA8300HD. Enjoy the little boost in speed. Happy too, that I can record programs that are repeated throughout the day at a specific time, an option that was somehow missing from my 8300 with Mystro software. (And an odd fluke with that combo was that it recorded double instances of a program on Mondays only).
However I don’t like the 3x fast forward on the 3090 as it goes well beyond the resume of programming before you can stop it.

Here’s hoping the local TW office comes up with a supply of 320 GB HD units as I constantly run out of space recording HD movies (HBO and Starz in my package).

The holes can clearly identify a 320 GB HDD. It's a Seagate Pipeline HD unit rated at 320 GB.

adrman,

I wouldn't do that since it seems to only like whatever HDD thats in it. One guy did do it and it would cause the box to act up. There were a few 320 GB models that were deployed in other divisions.
Just an update, today I swapped out the 160GB drive in the 3090 for a 320GB drive. I used the same type drive as the 160 (Seagate Pipeline). So far, everything is working perfectly. The box booted up and formatted the hd automatically. All settings and scheduled recordings were remembered. The entire process including format took about 20 minutes. The only necessary tools are a Torx T10 security driver for the case and a phillips head screwdriver for the drive caddie. I'll give it a good workout over the next week or so and post back.

Yes, please do.
The Pipeline HD series also has a 500GB available. And the Pipeline HD Pro is a 1TB unit.
You have to wonder if any or all of these would work.

I "almost" was going to try the 500GB, but since others already had success with the 320GB, I went that route. Realistically, the 320GB gives me around 40 hours of HD and that's plenty as I'm not hanging on to recordings. I really just wanted something that would let me have about a week's worth of my regular recordings and then let me record a game or two without programs being automatically deleted. It'll also come in handy around vacation time.

As we head into September, still no 3090 boxes in Staten Island , going on like 3 months.

Its a shame too. My opinion: too many customers lost to FiOS and they can't get rid of the current stock of 8300HDC. People move to FiOS and turn their old boxes in and then they have more and more.

Theory: If Time Warner Cable in Staten Island IS really part of New York's Time Warner Cable, why wouldn't they have the same database in their computers to just take boxes into another borough and swap out there. Starting thread for this.
