Re: at&t dsl / motorola 2210 modem / time capsule

sorry, the time capsule values are as follows (fixed subnet mask):

IP Address: 76.x.x.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router Address: 151.x.x.x

thanks for the reply norman... sorry if i was unclear. here is in the technician readout from the 2210 modem:

297 WAN IP Address 76.x.x.x
298 WAN Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
299 WAN Default Gateway 151.x.x.x

the values passed from the modem to my time capsule are as follows:

IP Address: 76.x.x.x
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 151.x.x.x

the gateway IP doesn't make sense to me. i would expect something similar to what you posted. is this a bad at&t config?

said by karmapolice :

in my modem config, the internet IP address is usually 76.x.x.x. the internet gateway address is usually 151.x.x.x. in "public IP on lan device" mode, my time capsule receives these values and does not complain (green light). on the "internet > internet connection" tab, the former becomes the "IP address", while the latter becomes the "router address". the subnet mask is passed as 255.255.0.0.
This part is confusing. The "gateway" IP address should be the destination of all packets leaving your network for the Internet. It should be listed as such in the routing table.

It has been ages since I last used "PPPoE on the modem, share the public IP address". Ah; found it. The screen shot shows how things looked back then, on a Netgear router, where the modem (SpeedStream 4100) was passing the public IP address to the router (Netgear FR114P). Not the actual routing table, alas, but showing the public IP address, gateway IP address, and subnet mask.

@sbcglobal.net

all,

i've been trying to configure my network as such:

--phone line--> motorola 2210-02 (PPPoE, public IP for LAN device) --ethernet (to WAN port)--> time capsule (share public IP, 10.0.1.x private network)

however, with this configuration, i don't actually have network access.

in my modem config, the internet IP address is usually 76.x.x.x. the internet gateway address is usually 151.x.x.x. in "public IP on lan device" mode, my time capsule receives these values and does not complain (green light). on the "internet > internet connection" tab, the former becomes the "IP address", while the latter becomes the "router address". the subnet mask is passed as 255.255.0.0.

therein lies the problem.

if i switch the "configure IPv4" dropdown from "using DHCP" to "manually" and leave in the exact same values for everything, the TC complains:

"the router address you have entered is not compatible with your WAN IP address."

any suggestions on how to get this working? i realize i can either use a double-nat config or run PPPoE on the time capsule, but i'd prefer this setup.

thanks for the help!
