I missed that. The 060 version is supposed to be the 2 MB Rapid Secure unit and does not have to be net booted like the 120 version with only 1 MB Flash memory.

Hey Doc. Roy's original post says he has the 060-5861 units which according to your post have 2MB. Does he still need to net boot?

The v6.0x Firmwares will have to be net booted on some 5861s as they will not fit into the smaller memory of a 1 Meg 5861s since they were made for 2 Meg 5861s.

EDITED: It looks like you have the 2 MB Flash Rapid Secure versions aka 060-5861-0xx.

»5861 Router - Firmware Release Notes v6.0.173

060-5861-0xx = 2 MB Memory units

120-5861-0xx = 1 MB Memory units

EDITED: You should read as many articles here that are available and the last article is about Netbooting only if you have any 120-5861-0xx units with the smaller Flash memory.

Doctor:

Evidently I replied to OP (?) rather than to your message.

Yes, I have the configuration manager, which I've been using. Not great on XP, however. I should be doing all this in Windows 98SE, which is where the technology seems to have ended.

I've browsed around the wayback machine, with no particular luck but haven't spent a lot of time looking for downloads as I've said earlier I suspect only the web pages are saved, and not the files that the links point to (which like the uk link are probably broken by now).

The easiest way to solve this is for someone with v6 firmware to back it up so that the file is available somewhere or email me. Maybe I'll have something to exchange with them that will make it worth the trouble.

You would likely want this:

»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ »Where can I download the latest Configuration Manager?

Then to read this:

»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ »Tutorial (w/images) showing how to update a 5861 using the Config Manager?

The 5861 v5.3.8.0 Firmwares are stored here and filename "kernel - 5861001-5380" is the Generic Full GUI Firmware:

»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ »Where can I download 5861 Kernels?

The v6.0x Firmwares were at the UK-Bug.net site, but it has gone off the web.

»5861.uk-bug.net/ (dead link)

You can use the Way Back Machine to read old articles there and to find some v6.0x Firmwares. There are a lot of broken links which is unfortunate.

Hi:

I've got the generic v5 firmware in my two units. Is there any source for the v6 firmware that I can flash to upgrade these units? I've got the -008 and -028 units.

Or, alternatively -- is there anybody out there with a 5861 v6 unit that I could "help" them "learn" how to back up their kernel.f2k?

Thanks in advance.
