Romantic and affordable restaurants in NYC

I've been surprised many times by my wife. I'm not sure whats her source but we have been to many nice restaurants in nyc where the check comes under $100 for 2.

To name an example freemans restaurant »www.freemansrestaurant.com/

I'm sure there are others but I'm completely clueless. So here I am trying to impress my wife this year. Any suggestions?

I like Cafe 'Ino, check may run you closer to $100 depending on how much wine you'll enjoy. The bartender makes excellent wine recommendations.

Any cuisine is acceptable! I know there's a dozen of nice restaurants just in the lower east side where the setting is nice and the price is great.

I do want to avoid the typical recommendation such as Peter lugers etc.

I was going to post that you had to choose one or the other, but I guess there are a few in NYC.

For me, it is impossible for the wife and I to enjoy a meal where the check is not over $100, but I guess that is related to the the restaurants we like.

You must be drinking some nice wine with that. Most of the restaurants I go to are quite nice and even with wine it's maybe $80 for a couple. Skip the wine and you're at almost half that. Unless you're eating some crazy cuisine - I stick to mainly Italian.

Nope, no alcohol at all, but then again we tend to frequent the higher priced restaurants.

More power to you for being able to do that. Does the food really taste that much better? Unfortunately I am young and still have to watch my money closely.

In general, the higher priced an item is, to a point, IMHO, the better it is.

An example, I love to go to Outback for a Filet Mignon, but when I go to Gallagar's, it is just so much better.

Now one costs around $22.50 with all the fixings, the other is $38 for just the Filet.

Here's the menu.

With steak I agree more expensive is generally better. As I said, I mostly eat Italian food and really that is based on the chef more so than the quality after a certain point so I can't say the super expensive restaurants have been any more satisfying.

Re: Romantic and affordable restaurants in NYC

That isn't always the case though, I have been to super expensive resturants in NYC, Las Vegas, Los Angles and San Francisco, and 6 out of 10 times they are super expensive because something COOL happened there than because of their food.

Example what's that steak house here in NYC that is supper expensive because some mob dude was wacked in front of it?

But then there is a steak house like Boa which I have eaten at in Malibu and Las Vegas, and while the Malibu one had fantastic food the Vegas one was unable to duplicate.

Cheap doesn't always mean bad food and expensive doesn't always mean great food, not even for a steak house.

These are a few that I personally like and have been to quite a few times:

The Water Club (One of my favorite places. 5 star atmosphere. VERY romantic and Excellent food. The Filet Mignon and the Lobster are both excellent here.)

The Rainbow Room (Nice selection of food but I usually save this one for a nightcap and desert after dinner.,This place has an amazing view of the city at night, very romantic and classy ambiance. Try the Vanilla Meringue Cake for dessert.)

May be a bit pricier than you were looking for, but depends on what you order. Very elegant and romantic: Asia de Cuba

I love the food here: Swing46 (A bit pricey but the food here is worth it. Order the Crab Cakes and the Mini Beef Wellington. Trust me, you'll be in Heaven!)

Not as pricey as the others, but equally romantic and elegant restaurant: Harbor Lights (The Apple Wood Roasted Chicken is great. You get a beautiful view of the Brooklyn skyline as you dine here.)

This one is in Brooklyn right over the Brooklyn Bridge, but has a great menu, and a very nice atmosphere. Plus it's right at the Promenade so you and your wife can go for a nice romantic walk on the boardwalk right after dinner and look at the Manhattan skyline: Heights Cafe (Try the Chocolate Martini).

You really won't go wrong with any of these. Trust me. I'm an old school romantic and love to treat my lady wonderfully so you and your wife will definitely love any of these places I have recommended. Hope this helps.
