Motorola 2210-02-1002

I see from other forums that the Motorola 2210-02-1002 Modem is a catastrophe for most users- all seem to have the same problem. The modem heats up after an hour or so of use, then locks up the internet connection until you turn the modem power off until it cools down. Sometimes you can just turn the power back on, but sometimes you have to restart your computer to get it working again.
My question is: How can AT&T keep selling what many users are calling absolute junk? AT&T replaced the modem once, then said it's out of warranty, so "tough luck!".
I will probably cancel my AT&T broad band service, but until then, has anyone else been able to get AT&T to acknowledge this problem, and what would be the best way for me to replace this modem with something that works?

Cheapest approach- hit the garage sales, thrift stores and flea markets. Around here (San Diego area), you can buy tons of DSL modems (including ones with a good reputation, such as the SpeedStream 5100b, 4100 and 4100b) for $5 or less (sometimes as low as $1). Among the ones I've purchased, there has not been a bad one, but, at these prices, even if one is bad, not a lot has been wasted.

Except for a few oddballs that are locked into MSN or some other service, pretty much any ADSL modem can be set up for use on AT&T- you don't even require an ADSL2+ model, since AT&T isn't presently using that protocol.

Just shy of one year with ATT Fastaccess and had to replace a fleabay 2Wire 2700. Looked around and bought a 2210 from a favorite mail order site for $30.89; compared to AT&T's $99 and Bestbuys $70; $41 w/2 day biz shipping to my door; configuration was a snap; slight changes in the GUI verses postings here, but no problems; with the heating problems reported I am using a USB harddrive stand to place it on edge and away from my router and other heat sources; 2210 vents on the bottom, linksys and other routers vent on the top; that would compound the heat issue if you stack 'em; seeking another fleabay modem as backup; got caught w/o one this time;

I just switched to the Motorola 2210-02-1006 that AT&T sent me to replace my old Westell 2100. I had read about the overheating issue on this forum, so I am making sure the modem gets plenty of air circulation. It sits on a wire rack so the venting out of the bottom of the modem is unobstructed and this seems to work fine. I also read here that you can help the modem breathe by turning it upside down.
Other than watching the heat I would have to say that the modem is performing as it should be.

I know two people using the bellsouth version of this modem (same as poolside) and they do not have the lockup problem. Maybe you can move it to another location to get cooler air?

My Motorola overheated 6 days out of warranty, replaced the 2 overheated capacitors closest to cpu that were bad. Then I cut a 2"deep by 3" wide hole out of the top of the modem. It dissipates the heat fine now. Looks freaky but works great.
