Seriously though, it's a small percentage of batteries that need replacement.
No it's not. These batteries are one step closer to death everytime you use them.
You're one step closer to death every day too. Everything wears out.

Demanding Apple replace laptop batteries for free is like demanding Ford replace worn-out tires for free. As far as I know, no laptop manufacturer replaces batteries for free outside the warranty period.
The hard drive being behind screws is understandable. Hard drives fail. However, they are not guaranteed to fail within a specific timeframe if used daily.

Batteries are. This is why they are placed in an area where where taking apart the laptop is not necessary.

Putting them someplace that is not user accessible without taking apart the machine is ridiculous. When Apple does that, they either

a) take upon the responsibility of replacing the battery for the cost of the battery, with no labor cost, as this is something any user can do on almost every other laptop

b) accept the flocks of pissed off customers over the next two years.

Also, on using a screwdriver, Apple laptops defy logic in construction. To take apart most PC laptops, I do not need separate containers for different screws. With most Macbooks I need an icetray and depending on what I'm doing to it, a separate icetray to hold all the separate screws.

I don't think Apple should be forced to repair items for free outside the warranty for free. However, if they take the end user's ability to do his own repair away, then it becomes their responsibility.

Isn't the whole Apple marketing campaign based on simplicity and ease of use? There are over 20 videos on their site mocking Windows and comparing it to OSX. Maybe dell can make one where "PC guy" changes the battery on his latitude and "mac hipster" replaces the battery on his new macbook.

Things have changed, my friend. My new MBP had 8 screws, all different lengths, but all called out on the back of the access panel. Piece of cake.

Interesting.

Removing the logic board in water damaged white/black macbooks always required a second icetray.

Nothing compares to taking apart a 12" PowerBook G4 (and I have done it several times)! Makes the removal of the bottom cover for a present day MBP look like a walk in the park!!!

Getting the CD drive out of the iBook that uses jumper pins and a connector for the trackpad(as opposed to the ibook that uses a ribbon) is true misery.

On many PC laptops of the time, you remove one or two screws, and it slides out.

The modern Macbook Pro(before unibody) reqires you have a right angle screwdriver to remove the two screws attaching the bezel to the LCD frame, or a very tiny one and tons of patience. The time it takes to get to that screw is twice the time it takes to take apart the whole thing, unscrew hinges, lift frame up, and get to the screws. I never understood this either.

Yep. They fixed all that. I should take a picture of the instructions (all in pictures--no text) inside the lid of the MBP. Freakin' brilliant, if you ask me.

They did good on the body, but the LCD is completely regular user unserviceable. I'm working on having new glass made for this, hopefully by the end of July it'll be done.

I understand that's one of the few sensible ways to protect the new, much more vulnerable, thin LED LCDs, but it makes it quite a drag when they crack.

Had to do that once to get the HD out of a 12" G4. Fortunately I didn't have to put it back together again as I was scrapping on eBay.

Try replacing the LED screen on a MacBook Air. removing that thin, glued on, aluminum bevel, without damaging it, was a major PITA. Never will I offer to do that again. BTW, Apple wanted $755 to fix it for a parts cost under $200. Nice.

Between that and the new sealed in batteries and looking at the iPhone, it seems Apple is moving away from repairable to disposable (price aside.)

Again, the battery is not sealed on these new machines and all it takes is a couple of minutes and a screwdriver to replace them. Realize that just because it isn't "hot swappable" per se doesn't mean it's not user replaceable.

/Rant off. It's late here in Paris

Right, since mass manufacturing costs are cheaper than independent (and often large company) repair services. It sucks that they take business from repair services.

They could take tons of business away from repair services with a little common sense.

Pour coffee into a cheap modern thinkpad, then into the cheapest modern macbook off apple's website. A non-nerd viewing the occurrence might assume the thinkpad costs more.
