...Haroldo, not having a battery work in a laptop is a VERY big deal. If you were able to get by with just a power cord, you should have saved the cash and gotten a desktop.
It was an old iBook with Leopard, so it wasn't worth replacing, but it also wasn't worth buying a replacement battery.
The iBook rarely left the den, so it really wasn't a mobile computer.
When the display died, I bought the MacBook.
You can't pay me to use a desktop computer.
Replacement batteries for laptops are around 50 to 80 bucks, why is it not worth replacing?

Replacement batteries for Apple laptops tend to be around $130.

Perhaps $10-20 more than it costs to buy a replaceable battery now? Big deal! I'm still on my original MBP battery, and it's almost 3 years old!
Yes. Multiply that by the number of Macbooks sold from this point forward with this type of battery. Not bad, eh?

Apple really knows how to nickel and dime their stupid customers.
Now they get people to buy an external iBattery for their overpriced iLaptop.

Do you believe a modern laptop actually gets 5-6 hours while you are using it? Most reviews put the new Macbooks around 3:30 and the older Macbook at an hour less.
Your kidding, right? AnandTech got nearly 5 HOURS with this benchmark:
quote:
For this benchmark I'm downloading 10GB worth of files from the net (constant writes to the drive), browsing the web (same test as the first one) and watching the first two episodes of Firefly encoded in a 480p XviD format (Quicktime is set to loop the content until the system dies).
So 5 hours of serious computing, and 8 hours of web surfing. Go see for yourself:

Who's going to reduce the screen brightness to 50% unless you're flying at night? Not to mention usage in the airport. Let's be realistic here. The new Macbooks make GREAT strides in battery life, but they are still nowhere near the claimed life. This is not exclusive to Apple, all laptop makers lie about it.

It lasted just as long as the original battery.

Maybe you should look a bit more closely, I see power ports in economy on *long haul* airplanes (sorry, 737's and A319 don't count) with Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental, Virgin America, Alitalia, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, El Al, Emirates, Finnair, Qatar, Singapore, US Air to name a few. Almost all airlines have power ports in premium economy and business/first class.

Nah, not on a slow 5 year old iBook. At some point it's no longer worth investing in.

I reduce the brightness of my MBP screen quite often, even during the daytime. If in an airport, I easily find an AC outlet to plug into if I need it. I think you're the one being unrealistic, do you own a MacBook Pro to back up your claims? I'm typing on one right now.

You're being silly. How many laptops do YOU own that Apple should profit an extra $10-20 so a technician can do in 15 minutes what any human being who knows how to use a screwdriver? Do you whine about swapping out memory in a MacBook Pro the same way? it's just as difficult to do as a battery swap!

The Apple hating is getting pretty thick in here. Apparently Gizmodo is right and Anandtech, a sight run by an engineer with extremely high-quality technical articles, is wrong. I think the truth is somewhere in between, and I believe its possible to repeat the results of both reviewers.

Realistically very few people need extra batteries, and those that do will need an external battery or forget about the Macbook Pro. In my 20 years of sales I only carried extra batteries on a few flights, realized working on an airplane is a pain in the ass unless in business class, and only use my computer for several hours while traveling. Which is pretty much the status quo on the flights I've been on, except for those watching movies (and the Macbook Pro clearly delivers when it comes to movies). Personally I run laptops at medium brightness, and desktop LCDs near 10% brightness, anything above that is too harsh.

Realistically the new Macbook Pros have incredible battery life given the amount of computing power (this isn't an Atom), particularly when you are just web surfing.

Spoken by someone who is realistic about laptop use in airplanes, my thoughts exactly! Amazing how many in this thread have little experience in an airplane cabin, or don't understand the life of a frequent traveler, nor have any experience with a MBP to understand that the built in battery is not a big deal at all! I guess that's what you get when this thread appears on the DSLR top 10 threads, thoughtless drivel. The last time I bought a spare battery was for my 12" PowerBook G4, and most of the time it stayed home! I was flying at least once a month to Asia at the time.

I don't even understand why this issue is even debatable. There are external batteries with magsafe connectors. There's nothing to complain about.

Wow you have no idea what you are talking about.
I guess you never really travel. Us that travel know most flights have nothing.

thats the key, right there. as long as they make it so you have an option to replace the battery at a reasonable cost, i'm fine with the tradeoff. longer lasting battery, better, more solid design of the laptop? i'll take that deal every time.

the battery in my laptop is loose and wiggles and creaks against the palstic when i pick it up. it would be nice to have that not happen when moving about.

Sorry, I travel very often both domestically and internationally, 100K+ miles a year, it seems your flights are limited to puddle hoppers and short haul discount carriers where obviously there aren't any powerports (what else flies from Newfoundland?) Why don't you do some research on seatguru before you come back with further nonsense? Hint: Look at the various airlines I listed, and click on airplanes that fly long haul like 747's, 767's, 777's (look for the ER suffix if you're still confused), or the A330 or A340. It's all there on seatguru. Some airlines are even in the midst of refurbishing their cabins, adding even more powerports to the mix.

Edit: As much as I don't like Air Canada's mediocre service, I'm amazed at how many planes they have with power outlets in economy! Last week's trip from Toronto to Vancouver I had power outlets in my economy seat both ways!

I think it's a good thing. More environmentally friendly and superb performance. If you are traveling long haul on a flight, you can usually plug in during the flight so i don't think that's a huge issue. i'm saving up for a mac book pro 15 inch and hope to get one in a few months.
Uh, it is actually a big issue... Not everyone flies business or first class.

The biggest drawback for this is on overseas flights.
Then fly an airline that provides power at your seat.
And once again, the consumer is faulted because the corps want to squeeze another buck out of us by engineering shitty products.
