CRTC Public Hearings on throttling (2008-19)

Time is coming for the CRTC Public hearings in Hull/Gatineau. They start on Monday July 6th and culminate the next monday the 13th when the big bad guys (Bell, Rogers, Videotron et al) make their pitch.

I'll add information here as I get it.

The room should be setup with approximatly 150 seats for the public. First come, first serve.

The meetings are held at:
Conference Centre, Phase IV, 140 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau, Quebec.

I've not obtained confirmation on whether the hearings will be carried on CPAC or not. It depends on whether CPAC has other programming that is more important or not.

Note: the staff at the conference centre think that 150 seats is plenty, they say that CRTC hearings rarely get many people from the public except for some proceedings on TV stations.

I'll be adding information to this thread to keep you informed.

Do they serve beer there like they do in baseball stadiums? It'd fill the place up for sure if they did.

Too bad they don't hold hearings like this in MAJOR population centres, like Toronto or Montreal. It would be SRO in a place like Roy Thomson Hall for a week, and almost as exciting as watching paint dry.

I was under the impression that you had to register to attend this. I'm getting a different impression from what you stated above.

Can the general (interested) public attend this, as is, without having to have registered last winter?

Can mom & pop just show up at the above address and sit in on this CRTC hearing?

Anyone can show up and get a seat as a spectator (within the seating limitations of the venue).

To speak to the Commissioners, you needed to register in february.

the CBC is talking about it before it starts. This means that there might be more than just token coverage during the week, and especially next monday when the evil monsters (bell, videotron, rogers) present.

The CRTC said that their web site would have a "listen to the live proceeding" feed.

CPAC may or may not carry the proceedings and may or may not cover them in their entirety. If they have more imporrtant stuff to cover, they will cut out of the hearings and cover the more important stuff.

If they have unusually high attendance at the hearings, the media may realise there is higher than normal interest and cover it more in depth.

said by CBC :

“It's out of my control,” said Mr. Copeland, who provides Internet service to about 3,500 customers on Eagle.ca. in Cobourg, Ont. He buys wholesale Internet services from Bell.
Once again, the CBC is referring to GAS as an internet service. It's not. Bell provides no internet connectivity with GAS. I sent in a complaint earlier today about another CBC article making the same mistake, we'll see if they care about the technical details enough to fix it.

It's begun.

There is a language-neutral feed that gives us french and english without translation.

So far, listening to Von Finkckenstein, I get the impression that he is aware that thorttling is bad but somewhat necessary and needs guidelines to prevent abuse.

But he is questioning Sandvine in a way that doesn't appear to be "we are your buddies, how about a golf game".

While there was a warning to not bring up the R&V issue, Fiincklentein has asked questions that are clearly designed to inquire about that issue.

Sandvine is saying there is no problem running P2P and time sensitive applications like online gaming and voip apps at the same time.

This is a load of bullshit. Even Bell knows they can't run P2P at the same time as something time sensitve because latency will jump up in the thousands.

CRTC even questioned this again, and sandvine again said it's not an issue.

lying sacks of poop.

What time are you supposed to present?

Not that I can watch live at work, but I can at least keep up with the various liveblogs. And hopefully obtain a recording later.
