Internet issues

I live in Houston (obvious) and have some Internet problems. First is first, I don't have the modem that was issued to me. We've had ATNT (SBC) since 2000, and they gave us that old router a Speedstream 5100 with 4 lights, and back then, I didn't really care how good was my Internet. A few years ago we moved to where we are now, and eventually got ATNT for Internet service provider again, and they gave us a new modem, a Siemens SpeedStream 4200, but it broke after a year. So I remembered I had the Speedstream from a long time ago, so I used it after the Siemens. I saw how I had a pretty crappy connection, I always disconnected and stuff, but not really bothered to do something about it until now. Now that I have a PS3, I experience bad connections, and the problem I've had since I switched the modems years ago was that my internet dropped a lot, and now its bothering me. 0.63 mbps. My question is, can my internet increase if I call ATNT and buy a new modem?

Re: Internet issues

To answer your explicit question - maybe.

Let's do a little diagnostic work first, though. Run the test at »/linequality and post the resultant URL. Let's see if that will shed some light on your problem.

Re: Internet issues

It appears that you have a router that is set to not respond to pings. Please allow pings, then rerun the test. (Pings must be allowed to the router, or the computer if you don't have a router, in order to test the last leg of the line - that from AT&T to your system.)

Re: Internet issues

That LQT looked like something else was going on. Two of the tests appear to have aborted.

Please rerun it and make sure the line isn't in use until it finishes.

Re: Internet issues

It looks to me like there's something going on between you and your first hop. So, open a DOS box and enter the following command:
Then post the last four lines of the file that was generated (c:\ping.txt).

Re: Internet issues

Oh, that's not good. The last 4 lines should have been something like

But, I don't like what I see even there.

I think I want to see the whole file. Please send it to me via email at (bbr01 at jisum.com).

Re: Internet issues

Dude, that set of pings is pure crap.

Are you using a router? If so, make and model.

Please email me your public IP address. I want to try some diagnostic from my end.

Re: Internet issues

Are you running in wireless mode to the router?

Do the ping again, except use the IP address of the router - 192.168.0.1 (if you haven't changed the default). Send the result file to me, again.

What I'm thinking is that you've got a wonky router.

Re: Internet issues

Is that the address of the router as you browse to the configuration page? If so, I would think it should have responded to the ping request.

Do you know someone that has a spare router that you could try?

Re: Internet issues

Did the "crappy connection and disconnects" start when you swapped the old modem in?

pretty much, it does not disconnect often though, 1 - 2 times a day tops, sometimes none.

Re: Internet issues

In that case, how about a new modem? At least we could get stats to see what's going on.

I can probably get a new modem, do you think this could fix my issue?

Re: Internet issues

Well, if the issue started when you swapped the old modem back in, my first guess is the modem.

However, it could be the router. If you had one of the new modems with statistic display, we could get a better handle on which it is. AT&T is currently selling the Motorola 2210 modem through their online store for $49 - »store.att.com/catalog/productdet···d=catMRG
