said by fcisler :As far as a losing one megabit if you get static IP. Are you serious? OOL fully discloses it. It's ONE MEGABIT. Do you have any idea how much more it would be to provide a gigabit router to gain ONE MEGABIT? It is much more than just one megabit. A 100 Port can handle 100Mbs. If you connect a 1000 Port on the Modem to a 100 Port on a router or computer, it acts as a 100 Port. Thus the most it can handle is 100Mbs. There is the issue that the connection is thus a 100Mbs Ethernet Connection. Ethernet has an overhead of 42 bits per packet. Thus assuming that the modem is passing the standard 1500 bit TCP/IP packets, they flow over the Ethernet as 1542 bit Ethernet Packets. This means that the 100 Mbs Ethernet Flow is 1500/1542 percent TCP/IP and the rest Ethernet Packet Header Overhead for about 97.27Mbs. This is the MOST that you can get if the link between the Modem and the Router/Computer is 100% efficient. If the links are 1000Mbs/Gigabit then the modem can be handling 100Mbs and the Ethernet Overhead does not matter since the TCP/IP flow is 100Mbs with the Ethernet Overhead using some of the remaining 900Mbs that is available with a Gigabit Ethernet Link. There is also the issue that a Router with 100 Ports may not be able to handle the 97.27Mbs flow and thus may throttle the connection more. The processing that it is doing may affect its forwarding of the packets thus reducing its pass-through rate. |

How is what I posted inaccurate? I would appreciate knowing so I can not post what you claim to be inaccurate information in the future. I assume that, unlike me, you do not actually work with Ethernet Connections and thus can not speak from experience. |

1 edit | reply to Eat Me said by Eat Me The problem is that you are paying for 101+.
With that $300 activation fee on top of the monthly they'd better deliver close to advertised speeds. It's a service without an SLA, what do you expect? |
