Lots of features that you'd find on VOIP providers such as voicemail to email and simulring.

But what most people are excited about is the voicemail transcription feature. Basically any voicemail that is left for you is translated to text and emailed to you.

Which needs a bit of work IMO. About 50% of the transcripts I get are mostly accurate, some are way off, and others it doesn't bother populating. Good yes but has a long way to go.

1. Incoming phone number
2. Incoming texting-compatible number (not mine...they haven't changed it for some reason but I'm in the minority)
3. Calls (and texts if the forward-to phone is a mobile) get routed to the PSTN numbers of your choice.
4. Call logs, text messages and voicemails are collected in an easy-to-use web based UI, which integrates with GMail to some extent.
5. All your GMail contacts flow into the GV UI. Useful for calling people (plus you get Exchange sync...very useful for me).
6. Voicemails are transcribed if you want them to be via computerized speech to text.
7. Your phone number + PIN gets you a local-number calling card for free calls in the US and cheap calls abroad/
8. If you prefer, you can initiate calls from the web rather than dialing into your own number. The system calls you and the destination party both. Handy if you're using someone else's landline.

I'm probably forgetting some things here. Sometimes I'll forward my GV number to my MagicJack (which I've converted to a softphone on a flash drive) and have a cool little phone system that way. The possibilities are many

The rates I've seen aren't all that good. CallWithUs, Future Nine and Localphone give me better rates to the international destinations I call. For some GV is only slightly cheaper than Vonage.

Compared to POTS LD service they are cheap though.

callwithUs, Future Nine and Localphone don't offer free domestic LD

I use it for simultaneous ring, which I have configured to ring my cell, work, home, and Gizmo numbers and I can pick up the one that is most convenient. The only issue I have is when I have to give my phone number to someone, they usually asks if it's a home, cell, or work number. When I tell them it rings all of my phones simultaneously, they look at me kind of funny like they don't believe me.

It also has a feature to transfer an active call to another of your phones so if you took a call on your cell on the way home, when you walk in the door you can hit the star key and your other phones will ring. Pick up your home phone and the call will immediately transfer from your cell to your home phone without interruption.

I also like the new callback feature since I'm not allowed to make personal phone calls at work (we have to enter an 8 digit PIN to make long distance calls). Using GV, I can now make the occasional LD call without any cost.
