unlimited service

I wanted to post that I just talked to a sales person at Millenicom and the person informed me that they are going to roll out a truly unlimited service within the next few days that will cost $10 more ($69.99). Has anyone else heard about this supposed unlimited service?

Re: unlimited service

I would definitely subscribe! Sounds to good to be true though.

I saw that they had changed the website the other day to indicate that their service was not intended for someone that needed Heroic amounts of data.

The question is if they offer a $69 unlimited plan, what is the cap on the $59 plan. They have to set a limit to differentiate the plans.

Re: unlimited service

Would people be able to upgrade their existing accounts or would we have to get new modems?

Re: unlimited service

I don't think anybody has the details on this yet. For all we know it doesn't even exist.

Would be nice though.

When I signed up, the $59 plan was unlimited. The email they sent me said unlimited. The person I talked to on the phone before signing up said unlimited, and even said something to the affect that it's really easy to go over 5G once you start watching videos. Now the $59 unlimited plan is caped at 5G and watching videos or playing games are against the TOS.

The big question is, how long before the $69 unlimited plan will be caped at 5G. Then well have the option of signing up to the unlimited plan with a 5G cap for $59, or for just $10 more you can get unlimited bandwidth caped at 5G/month.

I too woud subsrice that would be awesome. Why don't a couple others call in and ask about this?

winstonplatt

@comcast.net

Remember that verizon and sprint are the ones who inforce the caps, so it isn't necessarily Millinicoms fault that they told you it was unlimited. Also some people do get away with getting over 5/10 GB, so it's not surprising they told you that.

Just asked them about this and they say:

"That is correct. Obviously the footprint for the unlimited service is different than our regular service. Please let us know your address and we can let you know what you qualify for."

Looks like verizon/sprint were only willing to offer truly unlimited service to certain markets?

saltshaker

@myvzw.com

Well this is what Millenicom told me...

Saltshaker:
I recently read that Millenicom is or is going to offer unlimited mobile broadband usage for $10 extra a month. Is this accurate and how would I get on this plan?

Welcome Saltshaker! Your request has been directed to the Customer Service department. Please wait for our operator to answer your call.

Call accepted by operator Tech. Currently in room: Saltshaker, Tech.

Tech: If we are we are not aware of it - but we continually seek the best solutions for our customers.

Saltshaker: So that is no right?

Tech: We offer the services that you see on our site, no others

Saltshaker: Okay thank you.

winstonplatt

Seems like some have heard of it some not. He said it wasn't available in my zip code, maybe I'll give Cricket broadband a try, atleast it's cheap..

Could be that Millenicom is now able to determine which markets are not subject to a 5GB cap, and will only tell subscribers if they pay an extra $10 a month?? However, as stated before, this service is not bound to a contract. So, no guarantees, I suppose. Or maybe they will collect an extra $10 from new Sprint users until a cap is enforced.

Either way, sign me up for that extra $10... peace of mind for a month anyway.

I wanted to let you know that I had my wife call in and she was told the same thing about unlimited service coming for an extrea $10 (at least in our area). If it just is in select areas, I wonder how selective it is.

Let's not get our hopes up too much until we know more. This could be just some new WiMax plan. WiMax is great, but so far it is available in very few places.

On their site they do have a WiMax page up:
»www.millenicom.com/mobilebroadba···plus.htm

But it is only available in Baltimore, MD and Portland, OR. Very narrow area for it and I believe most people in those areas already have the option of cable/DSL.

Re: unlimited service

That has been there for a while. It is also cheaper than mobile broadband, not $10 more expensive like this rumored unlimited package is supposed to be.

I did call up customer service to double check and was given the absolutely no information pitch these guys appear to like.

Me: I heard you guys may be offering an unlimited mobile broadband package for $10 a month extra soon. Have you heard anything about this?

Tech: We are not aware of it if that is the case.

Me: So no?

Tech: I cannot confirm or deny any unlimited package, all we offer is what is listed on the web page. If such a package exists or will exist we are not aware of it.

The guy on instant messaging customer service used the exact same language "we are not aware of it". I wonder if techs were given specific instructions on how to respond to such inquiries.

I imagine some towers are underutilized, either because there are few users, or because there is plenty of backhaul capacity. It makes no sense to restrict people's usage of these towers, because the network will just sit idle.

Other towers are heavily used. On one of these towers, even one heavy user can significantly degrade network performance for everyone else, resulting in a lot of unhappy customers.

No one word can adequately describe what kind of usage is appropriate for all the towers in such a network. I think that's why Millenicom originally called their accounts "unlimited" and later started warning people about "heroic" usage.

Maybe someone has figured out a way to divide towers into categories depending on usage. That could explain why the rumored new service is available only in some areas. But how would such a system cope with changes in usage patterns over time? And how will it deal with people who move around a lot?

It's easy to say that the networks should just order more backhaul capacity. But the Sprint/Clearwire WiMax network is clearly struggling in their efforts to do just that. Getting all the necessary permissions to erect even one new tower can be very time-consuming. And spectrum purchases frequently cost billions of dollars.

Network management in the present technological/financial/regulatory environment is a much harder problem than it looks.

To the one who mentioned Cricket,,, here is what their website says:
"Throughput speed may be limited if usage adversely impacts our network, service levels or exceeds 5 GB per month."

Its amazing to me how they all seem to limit to 5G when its so easy to use that up in less than half a month. I dont watch videos or play online games, I just use it for normal web surfing and turn it off each time I am done.

Baltimore and Portland are the two areas Clearwire have rolled out their new service. Sounds like Millenicom is in bed with them.

Keep in mind when you are using the live chat you are not talking to a Millenicom rep - you are talking to an outsourced peon down in Georgia.

Re: unlimited service

Is it really against the TOS to game or watch videos with Millenicom now? Was planning to do a (very) little gaming tomorrow? Like hell will I stop watching YouTube!

Not sure about YouTube but I think mainly what MCOM is saying is no Hulu streaming or other such "TV" sites.

I've done that a couple times. I'll probably still do it, but not a lot.

I called about the unlimited service that they are working on and i cant get it of course im out in the boonies. You just have to give them your address and call customer service and talk to Dennis the techs are useless.

saltshaker

@myvzw.com
Why do people keep bringing up Clearwire? This has been available from Millenicom for a long time. It is nothing new and has nothing to do with any supposed unlimited EVDO package.

So you have confirmation that the supposed new package is EVDO?

saltshaker

@myvzw.com

Re: unlimited service

I am pretty sure it is just a Millenicom broadband account with unlimited data for extra $ per month.

I was told it was not available in my area by "Dennis" though, who claims it is being added in about 10 cities a quarter.

So it may be a new infrastructure, or it may be towers in certain areas are getting upgrades.

I too just got told I am outside the footprint for this new service . Said they are rolling it out within the next week or two, can't wait to see what this service is and if it's close enough that an antenna would pull it in or not.
