Re: unlimited service

What is the old saying? If we don't learn from history than history is bound to repeat itself? Something along those lines

30gb?? No wonder caps were put in. I don't care if the service is "unlimited", have a little courtesy of other people, others have to use that same cell tower. I'm sorry but yes, 30gb is WAY too much for one week on a wireless service. I have FIOS service (sorry for those that don't) and use around 110-120gb and 95% of that is from netflix & amazon VOD video streaming, but again, I have FIOS.

What SHOULD happen is millenicom/Verizon/Sprint should release tiers of service and those who want to use that high of bandwidth should have to pay a little more for it based on the tier. I think that's fair?

I asked that very same question to Millenicom. Here was their response:

Your response makes perfect sense, however the real costs vary according to the region (unused service in Austin is free, congested service in Tulsa requires the purchase of more bandwidth in a closed market, etc) and setting any price for any capped service runs into the identical situation down the road as offering unlimited for $69.99 (our price for the Millenicom Ultra account).

BTW: Millenicom agreed to a refund. I'm glad they did the right thing.

There Unlimited service doesn't make allot of sense. If an uncongested area becomes congested, will Millenicom just say "sorry we can't offer you unlimited service anymore" ?

i think millenicom is just trying to allow/provide as much bandwidth as they can get away with....no other company is even trying to offer anything other than the 5 GB/mo for $60 so ill stay with millenicom and see how the AWS goes- maybe like a Metro PCS for cell service, they can slowly increase their coverage area for the AWS service...

Yes, I'm through with Millenicom. They offered me a refund, but I had to press them for it. They originally wanted to take it back and then credit my account for $99.99 towards the purchase of the new device. But eventually they just said to send it back in the original box with the original contents and they will refund me.

I just need to find my stupid driver CD. If I remember correctly, they were burned onto an unlabeled disk, right? That narrows it down to about 500 disks I have laying around here. Also, what did the box come with? I think it came with a Y-cable and an extension cable, UN175, and the CD in an envelope with a big red stop sign on it. Correct?

Anyway, I'm replacing Millenicom with Sprint. I found a 25% off deal that I can get through a credit union that lets me get 450 minutes plus unlimited data for $52.49/mo, which is cheaper than Millenicom. So I'm basically getting the same wireless broadband service at a cheaper rate PLUS 450 minutes.

The disadvantage is that I have to pay fees and tax, and it's a 2-year contract. I also have to use registry hack to tether via USB or Bluetooth, or share wirelessly with WMWiFiRouter, so as to avoid Sprint becoming wise.

Sprints official policy is that data is unlimited on my plan, but tethering is not included. So if they see I'm using 10GB in one month, they might wonder if that much bandwidth could possibly be used by just a Windows Mobile phone. General consensus is that a smartphone, even with heavy use, would probably never be able to use more than 5GB in one month due to the limited nature of the operating system and hardware specs.

Anyway, I'm out of contract for my first 30-days. I'll tinker around with it and if I don't like it, I'll get a refund (minus $35 restocking fee).

Yeah, that's exactly what Millenicom is doing. I just wish they made that known to modem buyers beforehand that their uncapped service is "good while supplies last, then your screwed". My problem was I invested $99.99 into a modem thinking the service would last more than 3 months.

You can, however, get mobile broadband for less than you would expect. Just get a smart phone with an unlimited data plan and tether it to your computer. It's cheaper than Millenicom.

So which phone are you getting Kubel? I've got WMWifirouter on a HTC Touch Pro - works great, I really like that phone. That is a smart move on your end BTW

Kubel - i looked at tethering but i dont have have the necessary phone right now on Metro PCS - i want to upgrade to a Blackberry 8330 but havent tried to see yet if it will allow tethering...you probably already looked over on Howards Forums, they seem to know what they doing regarding tethering.... how long before the phone co's close that loophole though....i think it was last year on here someone said you could tether an AT&T GoPhone for unlimited data?? wonder if that still works.....

The nice thing about Metro PCS is they will activate any phone from any carrier - so you go on Ebay and pick up a Sprint Mogul or Verizon VX6800 for less than a $100 and have a fabulous full-featured WinMo phone that you put WMWfiRouter on, and you're good to go.

So sad to see this ..
I used Millenicom for a long time, they were great folks to deal with. Also "Jim_in_VA" and so many others here were so kind to help me tweak that puppy for max performance. Out here in rural AZ I was on a DSL wait list for 12 years!!! 34,000 ft from co. 3 mths ago a tech dropped by and said I could get a slow DSL right now. It would be just 1.5/768. But DSL.
I said yes before his words stopped echoing. I was up and running in about 1.5 hrs!!!! Yehaw!! Called Millenicom and they were gracious as usual and the cancel of my wireless was done right then. I hope you all well and that you have the same luck as I.

We are not in a MetroPCS area so thats not an option.

With tethering there is no issues with using it in place of the Millenicom modem? (Havent really looked into the tethering option but it would be nice to have it replace Millenicom and our prepaid Boost Mobile phone.)

I can now get a discount through work on Alltel service, not sure what phones are offered without contacting the rep.

If the phone is EVDO RevA capable it will have the same speeds as the modems. The two models I suggested are RevA and also have antenna ports on them, with which you can attach an external antenna if needed. WMWfiRouter is software you install on the phone - not a physical router.

Using WMWfiRouter can Alltel detect I'm using it tethered and possibly kick me from their service?

That is not what I have observed using Sprint, I have no idea about Alltel. Folks over at »www.ppcgeeks.com could probably advise you on that service.

I'm keeping my eye on your blog for the article about all this Jim...if I can get the same service but cheaper, then that's certainly what I need right now.
