Re: packet loss with AT&T (PacBell/SBC) in Santa Cruz, CA

said by chovy:

When I ping my subversion server at sourceforge.net I get extreme packet loss along the way, this is impeding me from actually checking out any of my source code.

It works fine from work and other connections, but not my residential.
I have not experienced anything this bad on other sites from home either.

$ svn co https://gpld.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gpld gpld

svn: OPTIONS of 'https://gpld.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gpld': could not connect to server (https://gpld.svn.sourceforge.net)

traceroute on the server "gpld.svn.sourceforge.net" yields the following:

$ traceroute gpld.svn.sourceforge.net
traceroute to gpld.svn.sourceforge.net (216.34.181.65), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  home (192.168.1.254)  5.978 ms  7.211 ms  7.434 ms
 2  adsl-71-138-143-254.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net (71.138.143.254)  78.620 ms  82.109 ms  82.671 ms

Are you, by any chance, on an Interleaved data path? Check your modem statistics page, if you have access. The reason I ask is:
Tracing route to svn.sourceforge.net [216.34.181.65]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms     1 ms     2 ms  suzuka.aosake.net [192.168.0.1]
  2     8 ms     8 ms     8 ms  adsl-68-127-107-254.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net [68.127.107.254]

My trace route actually goes all the way to the end without issue, but the numbers on my first two hops look much better than yours. I am on FastPath, and the line has no local issues. Your trace route suggests that something is happening very close to you.
