For $65 home premium seems like a good deal. Don't know why it has to be $15 more expensive (thats more than 25%) than in the states. We are always getting screwed like this...
Well I hope it lives up to its reputation.

| My computer buddy likes it enough he said he might even buy it legit. I took notice of that enough to get the free use beta and give it a look.
The first thing it did, was refuse to acknowledge my Motherboard install cd. Kinda lost my interest at light speed right there. I might have stuck it out if I had the ability to have sound, but without my drivers, it was a no go. And the summer heat is not when I feel like fighting with an install of an OS.
I will likely gladly convert next year, when it's not beta, and maybe if it can at least relate to my hardware. But pay for it? Hmm, can't see me paying X hundreds of dollars for something I KNOW will become persona non grata in 2 years or less.
Maybe if MS realized that not all of us feel like chipping into Bill Gates' charity fund donation generator every 2-3 years, it might make a difference. Maybe if Bill stopped giving his money away, he could actually drop the damn price of the OS too. 100-200-300 bucks!!? why not 40-50-60 bucks like all the other PC software out there eh.
I would kind of like to buy an OS that would remain viable for 10 years with free updates made available. Because X hundreds of dollars, better get me several years worth of service, or I will just continue to obtain his OS in the usual fashion.

| Re: Anyone else pre-order windows 7? If you take a Ubuntu disc it'll probably work fine on hardware that isn't bleeding edge, and you might not have any serious issues until you mess something up or accidentally delete an icon and have no idea how to put it back. Personally I think Compiz Fusion looks sweet and blows Aero out of the water, but there can be a pile of problems getting it to work for the average user.
My advice to anyone who's savvy enough to successfully install their own Windows is to burn the latest Ubuntu (because it's the easiest for novices to use) and give it a shot for themselves, to see what all the fuss is about.

You can also add specific applications, if you have some for some bizarre reason that are incompatible, to the DEP exclusion list... but if you're getting a lot of DEP popups, you might have another problem.

I have *never* had to add an application to DEP and I run everything under the sun. I used to disable it in 32-bit Windows because DEP required PAE to be enabled, and PAE causes a performance hit. | No, thats for sure not me! No keygens or crack nonsense. I tried installing a couple of legit games that used starforce, and DEP wouldn't let me. I googled how to turn it off but it didn't matter.
I know that starforce isn't the best thing for a computer, or have at least read about it.
Thanks! | |

| because I am a fair guy, I did download the WINE pack. Linux remains basically a bastard version of Windows 3.1 with it's DOS fun and windows 95 with it's graphic command box. I have to admit that it does install shit better then OSX (everyone has deleted some program from OSX). The fact that it still can't find my wireless card and modem is driving me batty. | |

| I"m on an Ubuntu distro right now. Even XP which is an 8 year old OS is so far ahead of it isn't not even funny.
I've really come to believe in just the day or so I've serious played with it is that the people that have programed it still think it's 1995. When if you use Windows or OSX have you had to use command prompt to really do anything. Unless you go out of your way, you haven't! While both Windows and OSX have worked on making themselves more user friendly (or as user friendly as a computer gets) Linux doesn't seem to care.
Netbooks where linux's great chance to go mainstream. Instead of sitting down and creating something easier for someone that has used Windows or OSX to move too, they made whatever they made.
That last bit is because I still can't get my wireless to connect, I don't even know if it sees the modem. I was going to make Linux my July project, but if I can't get that to work I won't. Unemployment is boring.

Put Dreamlinux 3.5 on it, and have been up stable without slowdown, without needing to run a defrag or malware scan for 34 days +.. no reboot required. I don't game on a computer anymore, so Windoh's! is a dead format for me. Linux FTW.

| It's just fitting that on the day that Windows 7 has gone Gold
»www.tomshardware.com/news/window···320.html
I just wanted to clear up once and for all the upgrade path to Windows 7. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
I just read about 20 articles where it seems that Windows 7 UPGRADE will required an installed version of Vista, XP or Windows 2000 (yes windows 2000). You will NOT be able to simply insert your Vista, XP or 2000 CD to validate your Windows 7 upgrade.
»store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Wi···B0F9E641
But here's the catch with XP and 2000. Either of those MUST be installed first and you must to a "clean" install with Windows 7. You will not have a direct upgrade path.
Here's catch number 2 which is very important but very little information has been offered on the subject. Once you do an upgrade from XP or 2000 with Windows 7, the activation will void those XP or 2000 registration keys, once that is done you will then be able to reinstall your Windows 7 Upgrade without having your old XP or 2000 pre installed.
Once you activate Windows 7 over XP or 2000, you will no longer be able to reactivate that XP or 2000 license in the future or on another computer.
Here's my situation, I have a Windows 2000 Professional full version, and a XP Pro full version. In order for me to keep my XP Pro license I will have to format my system and install Windows 2000 first then install Windows 7 upgrade. Which will then deactivate the windows 2000 license and I will then be able to "technically" discard that version and keep my XP still on my secondary computer.
