Re: Anyone else pre-order windows 7?

So many people sing the praises of linux, i wished i was good enough with computers to use it. But it sounds complicated as hell.

I like aero and glass of vista alot, the only thing I hate with vista is the DEP, thats a real pain in the ass...

If you take a Ubuntu disc it'll probably work fine on hardware that isn't bleeding edge, and you might not have any serious issues until you mess something up or accidentally delete an icon and have no idea how to put it back. Personally I think Compiz Fusion looks sweet and blows Aero out of the water, but there can be a pile of problems getting it to work for the average user.

My advice to anyone who's savvy enough to successfully install their own Windows is to burn the latest Ubuntu (because it's the easiest for novices to use) and give it a shot for themselves, to see what all the fuss is about.

You can always install Ubuntu with Wubi the windows install for ubuntu. It is like adding an application to windows. If you decide it's not for you can simply remove it with the add/remove option in windows.

I am by far a linux expert. Millions of users that use Ubuntu are newbies.

The only people I've ever had complain to me about DEP are people that are continually filling their PC's with hidden malware from loaded keygens and cracks from torrent sites. I have *never* had to add an application to DEP and I run everything under the sun.

You can also add specific applications, if you have some for some bizarre reason that are incompatible, to the DEP exclusion list... but if you're getting a lot of DEP popups, you might have another problem.

I used to disable it in 32-bit Windows because DEP required PAE to be enabled, and PAE causes a performance hit. It's no longer an issue with 64-bit Windows.

As a random kick to the Linux loves.

This is the page to get media files to work in Ubuntu. »ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683
Be honest, can the average computer user do that?

I work in a strictly Windows XP shop Windows 7 is a far ways off for us . We JUST upgraded to Office 2003 last month! Well, not everyone, as there are a couple of addins that we need that only work in O2K.

From a personal standpoint, I have Vista x64 on my laptop and it works good...I've downloaded the Windows 7 Beta onto a couple of PCs at work and it works pretty decently, looks like Vista just polished off. Like Vista should have been out of the box .

In reality if I can't play a media file I get a fancy popup that says "Download this to be able to play this file" I click ok, enter my password and kabam everything is done automatically.

No, thats for sure not me! No keygens or crack nonsense. I tried installing a couple of legit games that used starforce, and DEP wouldn't let me. I googled how to turn it off but it didn't matter.

I know that starforce isn't the best thing for a computer, or have at least read about it.

Thanks!

I would counter with »www.ubuntuguide.org.

It's a nicely set up guide for doing most things in ubuntu with step by step instructions. Yes, an average computer user can do this.

The average computer user can't find the start button in windows or the file button in OSX (if you have worked tech support you know that's true). How are they going to follow that page?

The average user can find the start button or whatever. Do you realize the majority of ubuntu users are novice users? If 20 million plus users can use ubuntu I am sure plenty of more people can it just takes time and patience.

because I am a fair guy, I did download the WINE pack. Linux remains basically a bastard version of Windows 3.1 with it's DOS fun and windows 95 with it's graphic command box. I have to admit that it does install shit better then OSX (everyone has deleted some program from OSX). The fact that it still can't find my wireless card and modem is driving me batty.

You're so full of shit it isn't even funny.

It's not that users can't find the Start Menu, it's that their way of using a computer is so ingrained in them from years of being forced to use one that any chance - especially something as drastic as Linux and all the douchbaggary that goes with it - will bring them to their knees. Someone can switch to a Mac from Windows fairly easily because there's no bullshit and excellent tech support, but what are you going to tell my Grandfather when his Ethernet card stops working? "Check the Internet Forums" ?

Yeah, whatever. Linux as a mainstream desktop OS is a pie-in-the-sky fantasy that is never going to happen.

Yea, it's definitely not ready yet, at least not with our current window managers and desktops. I tried to deploy a few workstations at a business and we hit so many unexpected roadblocks it wasn't even funny. Users would try to create launchers to executables and end up copying files, or they'd create softlinks to folders and then delete the entire contents of those folders, and freak out.

Shows you how little you know about linux. Ubuntu is a live cd or dvd. In most cases you can just boot off the disc to get onto the internet. Ubuntu does have excellent support you can call but you have to pay for that.

I know xp sp3 killed many computers, they had to revert to sp2 or do a fresh install. Windows isn't trouble free as you claim, even the experts had problems.

With windows if some corrupt your network driver and something screws up your host file or whatever. You have no way getting on the internet at all. With many linux you can get a live cd to at least get on the internet to do some basic things

I"m on an Ubuntu distro right now. Even XP which is an 8 year old OS is so far ahead of it isn't not even funny.

I've really come to believe in just the day or so I've serious played with it is that the people that have programed it still think it's 1995. When if you use Windows or OSX have you had to use command prompt to really do anything. Unless you go out of your way, you haven't! While both Windows and OSX have worked on making themselves more user friendly (or as user friendly as a computer gets) Linux doesn't seem to care.

Netbooks where linux's great chance to go mainstream. Instead of sitting down and creating something easier for someone that has used Windows or OSX to move too, they made whatever they made.

That last bit is because I still can't get my wireless to connect, I don't even know if it sees the modem. I was going to make Linux my July project, but if I can't get that to work I won't. Unemployment is boring.

This is 2009, I don't think anyone's interested in how quickly their 386DX can get on Google.

Also live CDs suck, Ubuntu is no exception. The grinding of the laser transport when I load, say, Firefox is infuriating.

My first forays into Linux and FreeBSD were in 2001 or so and I feel the former hasn't even matured since then.
