| additional outlet = no go
So we order an additional outlet through the online chat over at comcast.com and explain we live in an apartment but needed a new wall jack added.. rep says no problem and so on then places the order. The install is only $25.00.. perfect.
Now, after a 2 week + wait for our install date, a Comcast contractor shows up and says they can't/won't install the new drop. Says something about company policy about drilling into walls or some such BS. OK, fine I tell them.. I ask for them to leave me the cable, connectors and splitter so we can run it from current drop to the room, or connect a drop from the locked drop-box and leave it coiled there for me to do myself. Both refused.
Now I'm wondering how we can get this outlet installed for my elderly mother so that she can watch her TV in her bedroom, where she is spending more and more of her time lately.
Without running ugly wires all over the place (i.e. next to baseboards, from the wallplate to splitter to under carpet, etc.), what other options do we have?
Anyone else who has been in the situation have any insight or solutions that may help? -- Webmaster - Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »www.1-gb.net »www.ppnstudio.com |

| Since you live in an apartment, you do not own the premise and cannot give Comcast the authorization to make those changes. Depending on what the apartment management and Comcast has agreed on, some places have limited the amount of outlets you may have. So, go talk to your apartment management person and see if they can do it or will allow you to. As for the wall jack outlet, the $25 cost most likely won't apply because it would be a custom wall fish and subject to hourly charges for non standard work. The only real option would be to either do a carpet fish or run it alone the baseboards. Your options are limited and Comcast is restricted on what they can do in an apartment. |

In every system I have worked in you need written permission from the OWNER of the complex. Just the manager wont suffice. There is a thing called asthetics that owners care about. If anyone was able to run wire wherever they wanted it would look like a third world country. |

Both refused. Why won't the techs leave you cable so you can run it yourself(from the splitter to the wall plate)? Its less work for them ad they still get paid. I was considering doing that because I'd rather not drill more holes if I don't have to and since techs won't do any real work they won't run the cables through the wall. Since I don't have a compression tool I would've had them put the connectors on the ends. Apparently the OP forgot about that detail. Or maybe he has a compression tool? |

| Or you could go out and buy a pre-made piece of cable and call it a day. Nothing says you have to use our cable to put another outlet in your house.
Plus, if you go cheap on the rat shack cable it will generate a trouble call that will keep me employed. -- Tech at the Beach. |

The OP stated he didnt want anything ran along the baseboards which most likely means he wants the outlet coming from the lockbox outside, which I think he actually stated. No one is leaving him cable so he can run a line into the lockbox. Not only should he not be in there but Comcast will be the one tuckpointing the building once the landlord sees cable coming from the unit to the lockbox ran like a monkey.
Plain and simple- If you dont own the building they cant really run anything outside without the owners permission. In addition they cant really drill any holes from wall to wall, room to room without written permission unless its a Condo. Thats why it is so common to see cables along the baseboards. Some techs will run it where ever you need it letter or not. Others are sticklers or have gotten burned before. -- CableTechs.org/"Horrible People with Integrity" |

because the tech doesnt wanna get fired when someone trips over an ill placed wired the OP runs, and then so cleaverly sues comcast. in turn find out the tech left cable for the guy to do it himself....
leaving cable for a guy to run an outlet under his double wide hes renovating is one thing.....leaving wire for a guy in apartment is a whole different ballgame.... |

| reply to pokesph I'm a professional installer.. doing this myself isn't a problem (access to Comcast's locked drop box is) but since Comcast was charging me only $25.00 for the install, I figured that's about what parts would cost and I wouldn't have to do the labor
They rescheduled for July 6th as we have gained written permission from the apartment to allow the installers to do whatever is needed to complete the installation.
Hopefully this time around it gets done, and done correctly. Stay tuned for the next update. -- Webmaster - Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »www.1-gb.net »www.ppnstudio.com |

They did a few coax drops for me a while back, and were very nice!

we'll wait for Comcast to do it for a fairly cheap $25.00 since it'd cost as much just for parts.. not to mention my labor. -- Webmaster - Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »www.1-gb.net »www.ppnstudio.com |

| reply to pokesph OK the tech (contractor) was here today, 7/6/2009, and almost didn't do it.. despite us having an auth letter.
After clarifying with his sup and Comcast Corp, he proceeded to do the install (quite well too, for a contractor) and all is happy now.
Rob: I sure hope they don't try to pull that kinda crap on us.. we do have a transcript of the order (gotta love the online chat) so hopefully we do have some bargaining power should Comcast go there..
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.. -- Webmaster - Steve - - - - - - - - - - - - »www.1-gb.net »www.ppnstudio.com |
