Re: Netopia 3347 dedicated to Qwest

As long as ACN uses standard ADSL modems should not be a problem.

There are several ways ISP connect customers to the Internet: Static IP, Dynamic IP (DHCP) PPPoE and rarely PPPoA. You need to figure out which on you have.

1a) Static IP: you have to configure WAN port with IP address/Subnet mask/Gateway/DNS. ISP will have sent you configuration info.

1b) Dynamic: This works just like connecting a PC on your LAN. PC sends out a "Hello anybody home" message and DHCP server automatically configures port.

1c) PPPoE: This works much like dialup need to enter username and password.

1d) PPPoA: Not many ISPs use this and I don't think the Netopia supports it.

2) Second part consists of configuring ATM. Most Telco DSL providers use ATM to transport data. You need to setup two parameters VPI and VCI. For example here in Verizon land they are 0:35. Netopia has an ATM auto detect feature so it might be able to configure ATM setting by itself. If not you should be able to get that info from ISP supplied modem or directly from ISP.

I searched for ACN DSL and it appears to be a Canadian ISP. Not sure exactly how they do stuff.

Good Luck

Netopia Connection screen

ACN modem connection screen
Tom,

That was very helpful. I've set up the Netopia gateway as shown in the attached image. I've tried to determine what the VPI and VCI settings might be first by looking on the UI of the modem provided by ACN, second by searching on the internet, and finally by calling the support people from the ISP. Nothing! I've also included an attachment showing the ACN modem's connection settings in case any of it can be used to answer this question when viewed by someone who knows what they're doing. The support people just say they don't know that kind of information and recommend buying a stand-alone wireless router from Radio Shack. I intend to call them back and see if I get a different response from a different technician but I'm afraid they've been trained to respond in the way the first one did. Why they insist on our using their modem I don't know. We're paying them for the service!

I am tempted to start plugging in values and use trial and error.

Any more pointers or ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Dan

Thanks again, Tom.

After my last post I started trying different values. My first one tried worked! After the connection was up the UI showed that this signal is associated with Covad. The values I used (so that it might help others in the same boat) were 0/35. I really appreciate the time you took to point me in the right direction. It's great when stuff works!

I suspect that if you had turned on the Netopia modem's "Autosensing" function, the modem would have learned the required parameters for your connection.

Here is an interesting list of setup parameters for ISP's around the world: »server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-9···ion=view
