Instead of having 4 different security programs running, how would CIS fare? My wife's machine isn't the latest or greatest, and is running Avast, PcTools Firewall Plus, SWT, and Boclean (discontinued as a stand alone, I know). Avast is my favorite free a/v, but how would CIS be? It would be nice to get rid of some of these standalone apps and free up some space for her.
Any suggestions, or comments? Anything is welcomed.

| The firewall is very good (passes all leak tests when configured properly), but can get very annoying for novices.
The anti-virus scanner is horrible. The best score I saw it did was 70% detection rate which, is terrible when compared to McAfee or Norton.

You're better off staying with your current setup, IMO. As stated above, Comodo AV has a poor detection rate and Comodo has issued security certs to known malware producers on that end of their business, making their business ethics questionable. Personally, I prefer stand alone products as layered security rather than suites that may be taken out or fail at once. |

I have to agree with the other posters so far.
Stay with what you have minus the discontinued BoClean.
You could maybe add SpyWare Blaster for added protection.
Uses no extra resources.

Sheesh! What kind of sites is your wife visiting that you need all that running anyway?
Shouldn't need anymore than the firewall and av, and personally, I never run av in real time either. Well, I do have Spybot's SDHelper. No teatimer.

IMO, swap out WinPatrol (free is good, paid better because it scans in real-time instead of periodically) for the discontinued BOClean and stay with the rest of what you have...

Just go with the new Microsoft Security Essentials Antivirus when it comes out of beta in a month or so.. It's free, light, and it's predecessor (LiveOne) had excellent detection!
As for Firewall, stay with the Windows one, use a router, or use something free.. |

Difference being MS is not doing business with malware purveyors. I don't want the company I am relying on for the security of my computer to have any business dealings with the bad guys. I've stopped using other software for that.
As to MS, I'm currently splitting time between MS and Linux and will probably at some point go to Linux full time as I'm not please with some of the changes they've made to their OS that I'm not happy with.

| I still am willing to give Comodo the benefit of the doubt before dismissing the company as a whole. Like the Sony rootkit fiasco some users chanted "Boycott Sony" which is not practical considering only one division screwed up and Sony still makes one of the best portable Shortwave Radios around which I bought regardless of the root kit issue.
I do not believe Comodo sought out malware purveyors or even realized until after the fact as far as I know that they had sold or conducted business with them.

I like Win 7 and will upgrade when the time comes later this year. I did have Ubuntu setup on my old notebook on a partition but have yet to put it on this new notebook. Soon though.

Comodo tends to get in your face a lot initially and after anything has changed. You need to make informed allow/deny choices. |

As other have already stated, Comodo's anti-virus is weak. Your wife is better off with Avast or Avira. The firewall is strong though. But I believe CIS comes with a HIPS compontent. Which requires answering quite a few security questions (allow/deny) programs to run or not. This can be confusing even to experienced computer users. I think your wife might not like have to deal with all the questions/prompts. This would most likely have to be disabled.
With all that said, I think your wife's current set up is pretty nice as it is. If she has not complained about any problems or issues, then why try to fix it?
You could try ThreatFire to replace Boclean/SWT. It's a free behavioral blocker made by the same people who make PcTools Firewall.
There are other internet security suites out there. I don't know if cost is an issue or not. Norton Internet Security 2009 is very nice. It's light and is easy to work with. It has a free trial. If you look on ebay, you can usually find a deal.

I'm one of the ones staying away because of the toolbar thing and the certs controversy. No need for extra toolbar in a security product, and the response from Comodo to the certs thing has been lacking.
If you can get by that, the firewall is good. |

| Not sure what toolbar thing you are talking about unless it is when on installation you are asked if you want to install a toolbar in which case there are other free software programs including security programs that do this. I find not clicking through an install will avoid installing unwanted toolbars and search engines.

| Yours is a legit concern and I do not begrudge you that but I feel if the cost for a "free" program even security software is the request to install but decline a toolbar or search engine that is fine with me.
