| reply to poppster Re: Comodo Internet Security.
I've had CIS running on my cousins laptop for over a year with no problems other than the iwin games quarantine issue. She loves jewelquest. Anyway, I updated it yesterday from 3.8 to 3.10 with no problems.
On my laptop I use Avast Free, Threatfire Free and Comodo FW. I've yet to have any problems with this combo. -- An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. - Sir Winston Churchill |

| reply to poppster Just a little update. My wife's machine was acting kinda funny, so I did a boot time scan with Avast. It didn't find anything. Then Avast shut itself down and wouldn't respond or restart without a reboot. I then decided to try CIS 3.9 av and firewall. I tell you guys, it's pretty decent...it found 14 nasties on her machine (iwin games, I know...I know...) installed without a hitch and is very light on resources. I won't ditch Avast Pro on my machine however. I don't think it was a problem with avast so much, but a problem inside of her pc. Avast is still my first choice, but CIS is running very nicely on her machine, and taking up half of the resources that Avast did.
That is all. -- What else would you do? -- There is hope! |

| reply to oxymoron69 We love PCTools Firewall Plus, it has a hips module and it works very well, with minimal alerts. I was just really looking for an all-in-one package I guess.

| reply to cork1958 said by cork1958 :Sheesh! What kind of sites is your wife visiting that you need all that running anyway? Shouldn't need anymore than the firewall and av, and personally, I never run av in real time either. Well, I do have Spybot's SDHelper. | reply to poppster The two things that some people object to as far as Comodo goes are their continued issuance of security certificates to malware, as exposed by Mike Burgess in his hosts blog, here and here, and their bundling of the Ask toolbar with their security products.
Personally, I am willing to give them a second chance on both accounts, but I dumped their AV in favor of Avira Anti-Vir Free, after seeing that it did pretty poorly on a lot of tests, and on VirusTotal reports. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

| reply to mvdu People and companies make mistakes.
When choosing a security program IMO one must take into account software issues, security issues, company issues, support, history and then make a decision.
It is often hard for new users to discern which program to choose when a thread often turns into a platform of "My choice is best" or "This company is better then yours." -- "Facts not FUD!" |

| reply to Grail Knight I don't begrudge you either; it's a personal choice. If I knew that Comodo needs the money, which I don't, I might think differently. It's the certs issue and response that finally made me not use it, though I did not like the toolbar thing. IMO they have a security product, so they can lead on cert issuing. |

| reply to mvdu Yours is a legit concern and I do not begrudge you that but I feel if the cost for a "free" program even security software is the request to install but decline a toolbar or search engine that is fine with me. -- "Facts not FUD!" |

| reply to mvdu Not sure what toolbar thing you are talking about unless it is when on installation you are asked if you want to install a toolbar in which case there are other free software programs including security programs that do this. I find not clicking through an install will avoid installing unwanted toolbars and search engines. -- "Facts not FUD!" |

| reply to Grail Knight I'm one of the ones staying away because of the toolbar thing and the certs controversy. No need for extra toolbar in a security product, and the response from Comodo to the certs thing has been lacking.
If you can get by that, the firewall is good. |

| reply to Stem Bolt said by Stem Bolt :I think your wife might not like have to deal with all the questions/prompts. This would most likely have to be disabled. Another approach might be to install Comodo and then exercise all the usual programs and deal with the prompts. Then you would be pretty much set until something upgrades. |

2 edits | reply to poppster As other have already stated, Comodo's anti-virus is weak. Your wife is better off with Avast or Avira. The firewall is strong though. But I believe CIS comes with a HIPS compontent. Which requires answering quite a few security questions (allow/deny) programs to run or not. This can be confusing even to experienced computer users. I think your wife might not like have to deal with all the questions/prompts. This would most likely have to be disabled.
With all that said, I think your wife's current set up is pretty nice as it is. If she has not complained about any problems or issues, then why try to fix it?
You could try ThreatFire to replace Boclean/SWT. It's a free behavioral blocker made by the same people who make PcTools Firewall.
There are other internet security suites out there. I don't know if cost is an issue or not. Norton Internet Security 2009 is very nice. It's light and is easy to work with. It has a free trial. If you look on ebay, you can usually find a deal. -- Dr. Web 5.0 + ThreatFire + Router/SPI |

1 edit | reply to Grail Knight said by Grail Knight :I use CIS and like it. I do however do not use the AV component of CIS but went with Avast. No problems. I would second that. Comodo minus its AV but plus Avast should be pretty solid. That leaves Comodo in both firewall and HIPS roles.
Comodo tends to get in your face a lot initially and after anything has changed. You need to make informed allow/deny choices. |
