She loves jewelquest. Anyway, I updated it yesterday from 3.8 to 3.10 with no problems.

On my laptop I use Avast Free, Threatfire Free and Comodo FW. I've yet to have any problems with this combo.

My wife's machine was acting kinda funny, so I did a boot time scan with Avast. It didn't find anything. Then Avast shut itself down and wouldn't respond or restart without a reboot. I then decided to try CIS 3.9 av and firewall. I tell you guys, it's pretty decent...it found 14 nasties on her machine (iwin games, I know...I know...) installed without a hitch and is very light on resources. I won't ditch Avast Pro on my machine however. I don't think it was a problem with avast so much, but a problem inside of her pc. Avast is still my first choice, but CIS is running very nicely on her machine, and taking up half of the resources that Avast did.

Personally, I am willing to give them a second chance on both accounts, but I dumped their AV in favor of Avira Anti-Vir Free, after seeing that it did pretty poorly on a lot of tests, and on VirusTotal reports.

When choosing a security program IMO one must take into account software issues, security issues, company issues, support, history and then make a decision.

It is often hard for new users to discern which program to choose when a thread often turns into a platform of "My choice is best" or "This company is better then yours."

With all that said, I think your wife's current set up is pretty nice as it is. If she has not complained about any problems or issues, then why try to fix it?

You could try ThreatFire to replace Boclean/SWT. It's a free behavioral blocker made by the same people who make PcTools Firewall.

There are other internet security suites out there. I don't know if cost is an issue or not. Norton Internet Security 2009 is very nice. It's light and is easy to work with. It has a free trial. If you look on ebay, you can usually find a deal.

I would second that. Comodo minus its AV but plus Avast should be pretty solid. That leaves Comodo in both firewall and HIPS roles.

Comodo tends to get in your face a lot initially and after anything has changed. As to MS, I'm currently splitting time between MS and Linux and will probably at some point go to Linux full time as I'm not please with some of the changes they've made to their OS that I'm not happy with.

Avast is my favorite free a/v, but how would CIS be? It would be nice to get rid of some of these standalone apps and free up some space for her.

Any suggestions, or comments? Anything is welcomed.
