Did not know that.... I finally got things running yesterday and unfortunately ran out of disk space both on the virtual drive and sda2 on the laptop......all from inexperience on my part.... currently GPartd is shrinking sda 3 by 15 GB and adding that to sda 2. However...... its a loooonnnnggg process since I initiated the resize last night and its mid day today and its still not finished yet......hopefully by tomorrow  Additionally Im going to put another 2 GB of RAM in the machine for a total of 3..... I mean if you are going to have a laptop it should run pretty quickly...... I currently have 512 MB allocated to VM and XP and its not nearly enough. I figure if I can put 2 gig in there to join the existing 1, and reallocate a gig to VM then it should run better.
Sir Meowmix III I didnt even realize that this weekend was field day how was it?

You can just download the binary version of VirtualBox instead of the OS Edition. I have the Nokia map uploader installed in the binary version using XP and it works great. |

I have been using VMware Server with Fedora 7 for a few years now... I think 2 now.... USB works flawlessly with it... I have to run XP on a vmware img for my cell phone due to work... Along with my BSD developer image and some other developer images.
Go for it!

Thanks John for the excellent info and the link.....VM is on my laptop with SUSE 10.3 as the host and only a gig of RAM..I plan to change that tomorrow and add another gig to the laptop..... I ended up unil 5:30 this morning playing with things and have a couple of problems Im going to try to solve before asking for help with them.....but yeah most of the time I spent in updating the very early copy of XP Pro that I installed as the guest...that literally took hours plus I locked powersave in performance mode to get the CPU speed to stay up at 1.8GHz as well.....even with the machine plugged in powersave kept throttling back. Couple of interesting things, I also changed the CPU config under VMWare from single to 2 cores and XP handled it without a burp.....
I imagine that with 8 GB your machine is fast!
Later today Ill get a look at the tweaks site and post back on how things go......

Yeah that's the only thing I forgot to mention - with vmware the more memory the better in the host machine, you don't want to be swapping. If you can toss another gig or three of ram into that host linux box things will run a lot better.

Check that out, and the pages it links to.
The ones I do (I run a couple vms - xp and centos - under ubuntu server) include the "fit all into prealocated memory" ones, no memory trimming, and using a tmpfs file system for the memory backing file vmware insists on creating.
That and 6gb of ram and things run pretty snappy

Yep memory allocated to the guest OS can be changed. During the last reboot I stoipped the VM and changed it. Highlight the VM in the left pane. In the right pane choose the hardware tab and its possible to edit what is allowed the VM> I changed to 512 MB of RAM, restarted and so far so good.

I've not tried to change the RAM; I set up 512 MB initially and it's fast enough for my needs. I believe, however, that it's possible. VMWare has its own set of forums and I've found useful hints there, including the VMX modification to get VNC access (the standard Web Access interface seems draggy by comparison, and would not work with Win98 boxes on my LAN). Click the "appliances" entry on the Web Access toolbar to get to the VMWare community areas...

Can I change the amount of RAM I allocate to any virtual machine after the install (guest os) is done?? I allowed the default allocation of 256 MB (The laptop has 1 gig) and its somewhat draggy...I would like to increase the size to 500 MB.... anyone done this before?? Currently installing XP SP 3 and its sllllooooowwww.

Check your lucidtips link again after a bit; I just left a comment on that thread telling how to enable VNC connection to the VMWare Server's built-in capability that may help you use it easily. Basically, you add these three lines to the VMX file, with the actual virtual machine shut down:
I'm using this to access my WinXP VM from any machine on my LAN, to make it easy to check my Email regardless of whether I'm sitting at an Xubuntu console, or a Win98 one...

Yep pretty awesome so far....after getting VMWare made and installed, am loading XP Pro. So far so good. I remember running a DOS shell on an emulator as part of (I think) AT&T UNIX on an AT&T desktop machine, with a Motorola 68000 series processor and windowing some many years ago. I need to and am going to in the next few days read up on virtualization and how its done. Surprisingly watching the CPU load on GKrellm, its a lot lighter than I thought it would have been all things considered.

The Linux part of this has been dead easy after I realized that I didnt have the kernel source installed, did that, restarted the VMware install and after that there was nothing to it....

I tried WINE and it crashed. Then Crossover and the installer crashed and produced probably 15 pages of error logs. THen VirtualBox... got XP installed no problem (this is what happens when you work on one project for far too long and are a little punchy from being in front of the computer for several hours without a break) but then the program for the Nokia refused to install in the XP shell saying the OS was not supported ( at least the installer attempted to run in Crossover eh?? LOL). After all of this in reading fine print on Virtual Box I discovered that the OS version (read non- pay) did not support USB which the phone must have to connect........
It does seem like all of this is the necessity to swallow an elephant to talk to a fly..... I read the Ubuntu article and its excellent.... I had planned to try something like this using Gpartd...but had not thought about using the native SUSe tools. At this point I ve invested more time than I anticipated with the new phone--Nokia support is horrible incidentally regarding their products and there is more information from the online community available than the manufacturer. It seems the way things are though.
In trying to resize /home on the laptop, if I decide to invest yet more time in this and frag the install then there wont be much lost thats not fairly easily recoverable. I can always nuke the HD and install 11.1 ( since I ve got that running on this machine, the desktop) after the fact of installing XP. Its just a whole lot of sugar to install a whole OS for one lousy program isnt it... I can transfer music and photos all day long with the phone in mass storage mode but for firmware upgrades and additional maps for the GPS, the Nokia software is necessary.

Depending on what I decide to do Ill post results in the next day or two.......Sir MeowmixIII, didnt know your dad was an amateur radio operator... I am as well, callsign is KF4VAR. I considered installing a mobile HF rig in the truck for this trip, an Icom IC 706MK2G--- I had it installed in another vehicle a few years ago and used to work mobile on HF from all over Mexico in years past....but another amateur in Panama cautioned against trying to cross all those borders south of Mexico with funny looking radio equipment in the cockpit and funny looking antennas all over the outside.... the trip should be an adventure to be sure just hopefully a good one. I ve gotten used to toting GPS with me on these forays and spoiled by it but still carry paper maps.... in hindsight it might have been easier to just have purchased a different less capable phone when the old one died and gotten on with it but the temptation to have an MP3 player, a phone and a GPS in one small box was just too great.... my old phone ran Linux and I did some modding on it a couple of years ago....but this new one runs Symbian although I read on some of the users forums that a couple of people have actually gotten Puppy to run on it for what thats worth..... anyway.
Again thanks very much for the interest. Ill report back on what develops over the next day or two with the laptop...

I haven't tried this myself. I offer it for information only. You will have to adapt the process as needed for Open Suse. This is the recommended process for dual-booting XP with Ubuntu where Ubuntu is installed first.

Carr, does it depend on .NET? I'm not sure if you're aware but VMWare provides their ESX (or GSX, heck I can't remember) free of charge. You could use this (as my father does for Ham Radio Deluxe to a TS-2000 (no luck running in CXOffice/Wine/etc)) to virtually load Win32 and avoid having to duel-boot (duel as in the literal meaning, since there is no cooperation in booting when it comes to Win32).

| After a frustrating number of hours playing with Virtual Box, Wine and Crossover Im considering installing XP Pro on my laptop dual boot. There is some support software for my PDA that apparently wont run anywhere else under anything else.......
What Im considering is using GPartd to try to shrink /home and build an NTFS partition to get enough room to install a minimalist Windoze XP Pro installation so the Nokia tools can be deployed. I ve enough HD space to do this.....
I ve run several dual boot machines before (down to only 1 now) and I have always observed what to me has been the guideline that one should always install XP Pro first because it does not play well with others. I dont know whether its true or not. The laptop has SUSe 10.3 aboard in a happy, mature installation with a copy of my entire music library from the desktop (see an earlier thread about using ssh.....I continue to learn here and tis great!!!!!!!!!!!!!) so I dont want to frag 10.3. Unfortunately in my upcoming travels in Central America I need this piece of Nokia software to be able to load maps into the handheld as I go......sooooooo looks like I need some sort of functioning Windoze installation somewhere somehow....or trust Quetzacotyl, tequilla and the surf gods for a guide and only use the phone for an MP3 player.......hmmmm....
Question is, a)can one shrink a partition using GPartd without destroying what it contains and once XP is on the machine (provided the answer to (a) is "yes you can") what do I do to get GRUB back where it may be used to control booting....
Any comments would be appreciated. Even "forget tha whole thing" .....looks like I could find a better way to spend a Friday night but I guess not.......
