KMET returns - for a day By Richard Wagoner Created: 06/18/2009 03:39:41 PM PDT
It was Valentine's Day 1987 when the legendary Southern California album rocker KMET (now KTWV, 94.7 FM) left the airwaves to make room for The Wave.
Now, more than two decades later, KMET is coming back.
On July 10, 100.3 The Sound will re-create KMET for one day, using as many original Mighty Met personalities as possible.
On the A-list of potential participants right now are Jeff Gonzer (recently added to the Sound's staff for weekends and fill-ins), Ace Young, Pat "Paraquat" Kelley, David Perry and the master programmer herself, the woman who led KMET into and through its glory days, Sam Bellamy.
Actual recordings are being used to help set the tone for the day. Some of these airchecks will be played on the air, while others will help re-create the musical sets as they were played during the approximate years of 1976 to 1984, considered by most to be the best years of the station.
Unfortunately, not everyone associated with the station during that period will be able to attend. Jim Ladd, Denise Westwood, Cynthia Fox and Terry Gladstone, for example, all work for rival KLOS, and I sincerely doubt KLOS will let them off to promote another station ... even if it is a salute.
That being said, July 10 should be a fun day of radio for fans of the once mighty station. Might be a good day to take off work.
Maybe, just maybe, we can get Dr. Demento to do a shift. |

Re: KMET returns - for a day Sweet...the Mighty Met.
I heard Jim Ladd (arguably one of the best) mention this gathering just a couple hours ago. It's good to get the full scoop.
[Edit: KMET is also an AM station in Banning. They too use the "Mighty Met" tag line :-( ] -- "Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have" Thomas Jefferson |

A friend went to KMET that last day to picket the closing. He turned out to be the only one there. I think it was covered briefly on the news.
[trivia] The Roger Waters album Radio K.A.O.S. features some recorded bits from 94.7 KMET-FM (surf report, fish report with a beat, etc.) in the background, and the voices of Jim Ladd and others from KMET.
Jim Ladd wrote a book, titled Radio Waves, about a fictional radio station called Radio KAOS (really about the history of L.A.'s Mighty Met in it's heyday.) The first track on that Roger Waters album is also titled Radio Waves.
The callsign KMET is now owned by Sunset Broadcasting with an AM station in Banning, CA on 1490kHz. While that station is licensed for 5kw I think they cut back to 1 or 2 kw at night since I couldn't pick them up very far. |

 | reply to Bloominite Ahhhh.....A little bit of heaven 94.7 KMET.
Man I remember those days, I could pick it up down here in certain areas of San Diego.
It was one of my favorite channels along with KLOS. |

said by Bloominite:looks like a late 70s Everyman to me I was looking for a KMET logo which as I recalled had some rat in sunglasses, beard or/and cane or something. Perhaps it was another stations logo. I came upon this picture and yes, I too said this is everyman's mid/late '70 kinda' SoCal Dude.
Edit: I'm gonna give credit and Props to the source. A guy named Lee G, looks like a Lakewood or Artisia High '73/'74 or so grad. Plus he has quite a photo collection here, including the one above. |
